Moose season ends in Grand Rapids
8:54 PM
The Manitoba Moose season is over.
A 5-2 loss on Friday night in Grand Rapids gives the Griffins a 3-1 victory in their best-of-five playoff series.
Manitoba won Game 1 last weekend, but then dropped the next three games.
Defenceman Dylan Anhorn and forward Phil Di Giuseppe scored the goals for the visitors, who finished 29 points behind Grand Rapids during the regular season.
Measles exposure possible at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame campus this week: health officials
4:06 PM
The number of recorded measles cases in Manitoba has again jumped.
As of May 2, there have been 549 confirmed and 73 probable cases of measles in Manitoba this year. Three confirmed and one of the probable cases were recorded in May.
Provincial public health officials said Friday that people who were at the RRC Polytech campus at 2055 Notre Dame Ave. on May 4 and May 5 from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day may have been exposed to the virus.
The measles virus spreads through close contact with an infected person and through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
The province has recorded more measles cases so far this year than it did in all of 2025, when 319 were recorded.

Suspect hiding in clothes dryer among seven arrested
2:37 PM
Police arrested seven people — including one who was hiding in a clothing dryer — in Gypsumville earlier this week in an effort to “remove violent and repeat offenders” from the streets.
The Manitoba integrated violent offender apprehension unit — a joint force of RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service officers set up to capture the province’s most dangerous accused criminals — were sent to the Interlake community on Tuesday, with RCMP police dogs and tactical team members in tow.
Two of the arrests occurred after an officer saw one of the suspects walking across a field and into a residence. The suspects barricaded themselves inside, RCMP said, and officers got a warrant to enter.
Officers found Harley James Sinclair, 34, hiding inside of a dryer. He was wanted on several warrants for violent crimes, weapons offences and court order breaches.
They also arrested Clint Charles Marsden-Traverse, 27, on warrants for assault, mischief, uttering threats and court order breaches in the same house.
Elsewhere in Gypsumville, police found Douglas George Traverse, 45, who was wanted for theft and a breach, hiding behind a wall in a bathroom shower.
Police also arrested Lee Thomas Woodhouse, 41, Alvina Ardele Beardy, 46, Waylon Noel Houle, 33, and a 50-year-old woman whose name was not made public. All had outstanding warrants.
Louis Riel School Division support staff get raises
1:33 PM
Louis Riel School Division support staff have settled a new contract that will increase their wages by about 13 per cent by 2028.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees issued a news release Friday announcing two of its locals — 3473 and 4642 — had ratified new five-year agreements.
CUPE touted annual wage increases, as well as flat-rate increases ranging from $1.75 to $6 per hour over the life of the agreements, as “key wins.”
The annual adjustments are 2.5 per cent, followed by 2.75 per cent for three years and 2.25 per cent in the final year.
The release said employees also secured improvements to paid sick leave provisions, bereavement leave and topups during maternity leave.
“Union members achieved a major win by rejecting all employer concession demands, protecting vacation, union leave, and strike notice provisions in both agreements,” it said.
Educational assistants, custodians, bus drivers and their colleagues held a rally outside the St. Mary’s Road school board office in March to protest their stagnant wages.
EAs were previously paid between $24.12 to $26.79 per hour. The last time they got a raise was in 2022.
More tips sought on suspect in soccer player homicide
1:26 PM
Winnipeg police are renewing calls for tips on the whereabouts of an accused killer who’s been on the lam since July 2024.
Homicide detectives believe Tresor Horimbere, 23, may be travelling throughout Canada to avoid arrest, the Winnipeg Police Service said Friday.
Horimbere is accused of first-degree murder in the brazen shooting of amateur soccer star Mohamed Yusuf Abdullahi, 22, after a Canada Africa Cup of Nations game in July 2024.
The non-profit Bolo Program is offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to Horimbere’s arrest.
He’s Black, about 5-8 and 120 lbs. He should should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.
Anyone with information on Horimbere’s whereabouts should call 911, homicide detectives at 431-334-9160 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Funeral director to run for mayor
11:44 AM
A third candidate has registered for the race to become the next mayor of Winnipeg.
Mike Vogiatzakis, a funeral director, issued a Facebook post confirming his registration. It notes his campaign will tackle issues related to public safety, roads, transit, homelessness, addiction and accountability at city hall.
Christopher Clacio, who also ran for mayor in 2022, entered the race on May 1, the same day Mayor Scott Gillingham registered to seek a second term.
Election day is Oct. 28.
