No one hurt in accidental fire at former Vulcan Iron Works

No one was hurt in yet another blaze at the former Vulcan Iron Works building in Point Douglas Tuesday.

Crews were called to the Sutherland Avenue building at approximately 4:19 p.m., said a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service news release.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the intact portion of the building. They got the flames under control within the hour.

The fire is believed to have been started accidentally on the roof by contractors.

The site, located between Maple Street North and Argyle Street North, was gutted by a fire in July 2023 and has been the site of several fires since then.

Journey bringing Final Frontier tour to Winnipeg this fall

Don’t Stop Believin’ — rock band Journey has extended its Final Frontier to include a date at Canada Life Centre on Sept. 29.

The Any Way You Want It hitmakers, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, are celebrating more than five decades of filling arenas with a show billed as An Evening With Journey.

Journey currently features founder Neal Schon (lead guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums, vocals), Jason Derlatka (keyboards, vocals) and Todd Jensen (bass, vocals).

Tickets go on sale Friday at Ticketmaster.ca.

Woman stole five-ton truck, struck officer: police

A woman is accused of stealing a five-ton truck, leading police on a highway chase and hitting an officer.

Police were called about a stolen truck from a Winnipeg business on Paramount Road last Thursday at 9:35 a.m., an RCMP news release Tuesday stated.

Officers were able to catch up with the truck, which was travelling southbound on the west Perimeter Highway.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop near the turnoff for Roblin Boulevard.

As Mounties tried to arrest the driver, the truck started moving again, police said, and hit one of the officers. It also caused damage to a parked police car.

The truck fled as Mounties provided first aid to their colleague, RCMP said.

A chase ensued as the truck approached Oak Bluff. Officers tried to use a spike belt but the truck was able to avoid it before it collided with a school bus at the intersection of Highway 2 and Macdonald Road. No students were on the bus.

The driver took off again, police said, and officers lost sight of the vehicle.

A little while later, police got a call about a person walking in a field just southwest of Oak Bluff.

Officers found the person at 11:15 a.m. and determined she was the driver of the stolen truck, police said. She was arrested by Stonewall RCMP without further incident. The truck was later recovered behind a nearby shop.

Tara Kaminski, 42, faces multiple charges including assault of a police officer, operation of a vehicle while impaired by drugs, theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000 and fleeing from police.

The RCMP officer is recovering from injuries at home.

The accused remains in custody.

RCMP, local safety officers arrest more than two dozen people in enforcement blitz

RCMP and local First Nations safety officers conducted an enforcement blitz in Gods Lake Narrows over the weekend, arresting more than two dozen people.

Mounties from the Gods Lake Narrows detachment, along with safety officers and Anishinaabe peace keepers, located 24 people wanted on arrest warrants.

Officers also arrested two people for impaired driving while conducting patrols.

While RCMP were conducting the blitz, they also took two people accused of assaults over the weekend into custody.

Officers arrested a 35-year-old man accused of assaulting a 30-year-old woman with a “very dull” axe. She wasn’t hurt.

Then, a 20-year-old woman is alleged to have assaulted an 18-year-old woman with a cell phone. The 18-year-old was taken to the local nursing station to be checked out.

“This joint operation, between the RCMP and our partner agencies, demonstrates the continued commitment we all have in reducing crime and enhancing public safety within the God’s Lake Narrows and Manto Sipi Cree Nation communities,” said Sgt. Corbin Allingham, who commands the God’s Lake Narrows detachment.

International fugitive arrested in Winnipeg traffic stop

Winnipeg police arrested an international fugitive during a traffic stop in South Point Douglas last week.

Winnipeg Police Service officers on patrol in the neighbourhood spotted a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado speeding at about 3:30 p.m. and pulled the driver over near Higgins Avenue and McArthur Street, police said on Tuesday.

Police identified the driver and discovered he had outstanding warrants from the United States for aggravated statutory rape, soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor and aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor.

City police arrested him and notified the Canada Border Services Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Greenbrier Police Department in Arkansas.

The 35-year-old man from Tennessee was handed over to Canadian border officials, who will hold him until he returns to the U.S. to face the charges.

Bullet fired through apartment wall: police

Winnipeg police arrested two men and seized cash, drugs and firearms after a bullet was fired through the wall of an apartment suite in the city’s south end on Sunday afternoon.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were called to an apartment complex on Barnes Street, near Bison Drive, about a gunshot at about 12:30 p.m., police said on Tuesday.

Officers determined the shot had been fired into the apartment from the neighbouring suite. Police saw ammunition and cocaine out in plain sight when they went to check on the occupants in the suite where the shot had been fired from.

Police arrested the two men in the apartment and major crimes investigators got a warrant to search the suite.

Police seized two handguns, including one with a loaded magazine, four rounds of ammunition, 5.5 grams of cocaine, about $16,000 in cash, a scale and gang paraphernalia.

Two men, both 37, have been charged with a number of gun and drug-trafficking offences. They were held in custody.

Woman charged after fight outside Siloam Mission leaves victim hospitalized

A 50-year-old Winnipeg woman has been charged with aggravated assault following a fight outside Siloam Mission that left another woman hospitalized.

Winnipeg police and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a physical altercation between two women outside the inner-city homeless shelter at about 6:40 p.m. on April 30.

Police said a 58-year-old woman initially declined medical attention and did not want further police involvement. However, less than 20 minutes later, outreach staff called for an ambulance after the woman’s condition worsened.

She was taken to hospital in unstable condition, police said. Investigators were later notified that the victim’s condition had further deteriorated, though she has since stabilized.

The woman remains in custody.

53-year-old man dies in motorcycle crash north of Ste. Rose du Lac

A 53-year-old man from St. Rose du Lac died after crashing his motorcycle on Highway 276 early on Monday.

RCMP from the local detachment were called about a motorcycle that had gone into the ditch in the intersection of Highway 276 and Road 141 West, just north of Ste. Rose du Lac, just after midnight.

Officers found the man lying next to his motorcycle in the east ditch and attempted to revive the victim, but he died at the scene, RCMP said.

Investigators believe the man was driving south, then went off the road on the wrong side after coming to a curve on the highway. RCMP are still probing the crash.

Person in critical condition after house fire

A person is in critical condition after a fire in a home in the city’s Weston neighbourhood Monday night.

Fire crews were called to a single-storey house in the 300 block of Lock Street just before 8 p.m. and discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the property, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Tuesday morning.

The blaze was declared under control at 8:30 p.m.

Firefighters pulled one person from the home. They remain in critical condition, the news release said.

A cat was also found dead.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The house is expected to be a total loss.
