Deadwood star Timothy Olyphant is 58 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Your focus shifts to money, earnings, cash flow and to the things you own. These areas will be your main concern for the next four weeks. Trust your moneymaking ideas. At the same time, ensure your possessions are protected against damage or loss.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Ta da! The sun enters your sign to stay for four weeks. This happens only once a year and gives you a chance to recharge your batteries for the rest of year! This will boost your energy and attract people and favourable situations to you. Enjoy this advantage!

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Keep looking for opportunities to buy wardrobe goodies for yourself because this is an ideal time. Jupiter will continue to be in your sign, giving you divine protection. This happens only once every 12 years and this blessing will stay until the end of June.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The moon in your sign gives you a slight edge over all the other signs, which means you can go after what you want! Meanwhile, the next four weeks will be more popular. Enjoy the company of younger people. Set aside some time to think about your long-range goals.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

For the next four weeks, the sun is at the top of your chart. (Happens only once a year.) This means you are symbolically thrust into a flattering spotlight, which makes authority figures admire you even if you don’t do anything different. What an advantage!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your desire to get outta Dodge will be strong in the next four weeks! Do something to broaden your horizons through study, exploring new and unfamiliar experiences or meeting people from different backgrounds. Take a course or try a new hobby. Do something!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Fiery Mars has moved opposite your sign to stay for six weeks. This can make you easily annoyed with partners, spouses and close friends. Consider this an opportunity to practise patience. Travel is also blessed. How can you get a change of scenery?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You will find you need more sleep in the next four weeks. Respect your need for more rest. Ironically, another astrological influence is pushing you to work harder than usual. (Go figure.) Romantic relationships are blessed. Ditto for money.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Roll up your sleeves and get ready to accomplish a lot in the next four weeks. (The strongest energy in a year!) This energy will also transfer to sports competitions and athletics, which means you will be a serious contender for whatever you choose to do.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

In the next four weeks, you want to relax, enjoy yourself and have fun. This same window of time will promote the arts and give you opportunities to express your creative talents. Romance, fun times with kids and sports will be great choices.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Home and family will be your focus for the next four weeks. Fiery Mars has changed signs, which will energize your communications for the next six weeks. This is fantastic news for those of you who sell, market, teach, write or act.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Timothy Olyphant (1968) shares your birthday. You’re constantly curious. You move quickly from place to place, person to person and subject to subject. This year you reap the benefits of your hard work. Expect power and leadership. It’s a year of major decisions and accomplishments. Seize opportunities and act on them. Expect acknowledgement, awards and kudos.

Fatal stabbing of Ukrainian newcomer left family shattered

Erik Pindera 5 minute read Yesterday at 5:47 PM CDT

A man who fatally stabbed a Ukrainian newcomer in “a random, unprovoked, and senseless act of violence” on the street has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars.

Ethan Gladu, 22, was found guilty of manslaughter in February in the December 20, 2023 killing of Ivan Rubanik, a 46-year-old father of two who had fled to Canada for a better life with his family several months before.

Gladu, then 19, randomly stabbed Rubanik shortly before 8 a.m., near Talbot Avenue and Watt Street, as the victim was walking to work that morning. He died of blood loss soon after.

“The people of Winnipeg, or any community, should feel confident that they can go about their business, walk to work, support their family, and carry on with their lives without being attacked,” said Court of King’s Bench Justice Kenneth Champagne on Thursday afternoon as he sentenced the killer.

It was another Wild week in the Northern Super League — and talk about slaying giants.

Calgary defended its home pitch last Saturday and defeated the league-leading Ottawa Rapid 4-3 at McMahon Stadium.

For the Wild faithful who have stuck with the club all season, this one was for you.

The home side came out firing, barraging Mollie Eriksson and Melissa Dagenais with 16 shots towards the net, with nine of those shots on target.

‘Frustrated’ Selkirk nurses plead for help

The province must take immediate action to increase low staffing levels that are putting Selkirk emergency room nurses at risk, a letter sent to the premier and health minister says.

The letter, sent by the Manitoba Nurses Union and signed by 35 ER nurses, detailed multiple recent incidents at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre. In one case, a nurse was stabbed with a pen by a patient who had been waiting 24 hours for care. In another case, a nurse was bitten by a patient.

“Nurses in that emergency department are extremely frustrated,” said Manitoba Nurses Union president Darlene Jackson. “This is not something that happened in the last month — or overnight — these are problems that have been growing.”

The five-page letter was sent Tuesday to Premier Wab Kinew, Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara and leaders of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority. It contained 10 requests to improve safety inside the emergency department, including establishing safer nurse-to-patient staffing levels, eliminating the practice of “single physician coverage” in the emergency department and implementing an institutional safety officer around the clock.

Summer flooding sinks some fall harvest hopes

Tiago Resko 4 minute read 7:08 PM CDT

A number of Manitoba farmers say they are expecting this year’s harvest to be one of the worst they’ve seen after major flooding decimated fields at the start of summer.

Bob Elliot, who has been farming east of Stonewall for 43 years, said he’s expecting the operation’s 5,500 acres to produce roughly half their normal yield.

Stonewall has logged the most precipitation this summer, with 523 millimetres of rainfall between May 1 and Aug. 16, according to Manitoba’s weather conditions report.

Elliot said the amount of rain has created a “unique” situation for farmers. “This is something that I don’t think anyone around here has ever seen.”
