Man charged after body found in charred truck

Police have charged a man with second degree-murder after a body was found in a charred truck in Carman earlier this week. 

At around 1:15 a.m. Monday, police were called to a truck fire at a self-storage compound on 2nd Street Northeast, finding a 55-year-old dead man inside, said an RCMP news release. 

The death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy.

On Wednesday, RCMP said they arrested two people, a 44-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman in relation to the death. 

Gordon Blaine McTaggart, of Killarney, is now charged with second degree murder and the woman was released without charges. 

The victim’s identity has not been released and RCMP major crimes are investigating.

Police charge man with second-degree murder

A man has been charged with second-degree murder after a man was killed at an apartment complex on Sargent Avenue on Sunday.

Just before 11 a.m. police were called to the 700 block for a report of a fight in the basement of the building, said a Winnipeg Police Service news release Thursday.

When police arrived, they found the 48-year-old man with serious, life-threatening injuries, said police, with officers trying to save his life before paramedics arrived. The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, but would later die.

Police said the suspect, 40, ran away, but he was located nearby and was arrested. The victim’s name was not released, pending further notifications, and more information will be released when possible.

Oluwatosin Akisanya is now charged with second-degree murder. He remains in custody.

Selkirk gets first Dynacare lab

A Dynacare laboratory has opened in a provincial government health services building near the Selkirk hospital.

“Improving access to care closer to home means making it easier for Manitobans to get the services they need in their communities,” Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said in a news release issued Thursday.

“This new laboratory in Selkirk will help connect more patients and families in the Interlake-Eastern region to important diagnostic services in a convenient community setting.”

The lab opened on May 21 at the Interlake-Eastern Health Services building at 100 Easton Dr., which includes community health services and clinics.

Patients can have their bloodwork done and submit urine samples for testing. The lab will provide non-invasive prenatal testing and glucose tolerance testing. It will operate Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is the only Dynacare lab in Selkirk.

It is a collaboration between the province, Dynacare, Shared Health and the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority to improve access to diagnostic services for patients across the region.

Shared Health diagnostic services will continue to provide laboratory services for patients at the Selkirk hospital.

Two suspects arrested after stabbing near HSC campus

Two people are in police custody after a man was stabbed near the Health Sciences Centre campus Wednesday night.

The Winnipeg Police Service provided few details on the incident Thursday, but confirmed the stabbing occurred on the 700 block of William Avenue.

WPS spokesperson Const. Dani McKinnon said the crime appears to be random in nature, but the investigation is ongoing.

Officers arrested two people in connection to the incident. The victim was treated for injuries and upgraded to stable condition, McKinnon said.

WPS did not provide identifying details about the victim or the suspects, but expects to issue a news release with further details, McKinnon said.

Crime and violence have been prevailing issues at and around HSC, which is currently among several facilities grey-listed by the Manitoba Nurses Union.

Fire crews fight three fires in three hours

Winnipeg fire crews were kept busy Thursday morning, responding to three separate fires in approximately three hours.
At roughly 7:48 a.m. firefighters were called to a fire at a six-storey apartment building on Portage Avenue, said a Thursday news release from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.
When they got there, they found a balcony on fire, battling the blaze to keep it from spreading.
It was declared under control less than an hour later. A dog in the attached suite was also safely rescued.
Some residents self-evacuated while others sheltered in place, said WFPS.
The fire is believed to be accidental.
At 10:47 a.m. crews were called to the zero to 100 block of Archibald Street for a fire at a vacant, commercial building, said the WFPS release.
On arrival, smoke and flames were coming from the structure, previously damaged in a March fire.
Due to extreme heat, firefighters had to cycle in-and-out as they worked the blaze, declared under control at 12:12 p.m., said WFPS.
Firefighters were then called to the 500 block of Riverton Avenue at 10:56 a.m. for reports of a garage fire.
When they arrived, they found the garage engulfed in flames, and got it under control a short time later.
No injuries were reported in any of the fires. Damage estimates were not available and all three remain under investigation.

Two arrested after fentanyl-laced meth seizure in Brokenhead Ojibway Nation

Manitoba First Nations Police Service says a dangerous supply of methamphetamine believed to be laced with fentanyl prompted a search warrant and drug seizure in Brokenhead Ojibway Nation.

Police say officers with the Brokenhead detachment became aware of the contaminated drug supply after reports of severe adverse reactions and overdoses in the community.

On Wednesday, officers executed a search warrant at a home in the area, seizing about 74 grams of methamphetamine — including 66 grams believed to be mixed with fentanyl — along with several cellphones, two air pistols, a .22-calibre rifle, ammunition and a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe.

Police have arrested a 40-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, both from the First Nation, about 73 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

The man, who remains in custody, is facing charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine, unauthorized possession of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm. The woman has also been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine and was released on an appearance notice.

MFNPS is warning the public that illicit street drugs may contain fentanyl or other unknown substances, significantly increasing the risk of overdose and death.

Man sent to hospital after being hit by SUV

A man was taken to hospital and police are investigating after he was struck by a vehicle in Winnipeg Thursday.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. officers responded to the single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian near the intersection of Main Street and Redwood Avenue, said information from the Winnipeg Police Service.

At the scene, a blue SUV with a smashed windshield and a damaged front end, was surrounded by police tape. Police said no other updates are available at this time.

The incident took place approximately 200 metres away from another collision at Mountain Avenue and Main Street last Thursday, police said sent a woman in her 50s to hospital in unstable condition.

Police ask for help to find suspected killers

Police are asking the public for help to find three people accused in the slaying of a 21-year-old Leaf Rapids man.

Warrants were issued Monday for the arrests of Eternity Chastelaine, 19, and a 17-year-old boy, RCMP said in a Thursday news release. They face charges of manslaughter and second-degree murder respectively.

A third warrant was issued Tuesday for the arrest of Marshall Merasty, 24, who faces a charge of second-degree murder.

Police previously stated officers were called to “an open area” near Princeton Drive in Thompson on May 20 at 2:20 a.m. for a report of a stabbing.

The victim was taken to hospital and later died of his injuries.

RCMP released photos earlier this week asking the public to help identify a person of interest in relation to the slaying.
