A grass fire broke out in Whittier Park in St. Boniface on Sunday evening.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said crews were called to the park, near Archibald and Mission streets, at about 4:20 p.m. and began working on the fire with specialized tools.
Trains on the nearby rail line were halted while firefighters worked. Crews got the fire under control by just before 8 p.m. No one was hurt.
The fire service has warned Winnipeg residents to take steps to avoid wildfires, which can spread quickly.
The service said residents cannot have fires, even in approved pits and with permits, when winds exceed 25 kilometres an hour. People must also never throw cigarette butts from vehicles, into brush or into plant pots. The service also warned parents to talk their children about the dangers of starting fires.
