Woman, 22, dies after hit-and-run in Birdtail Sioux First Nation

9:54 AM

A 22-year-old woman died at the scene of a hit-and-run collision in Birdtail Sioux First Nation on Friday night.

Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers were called several times just before 11 p.m. on Friday about a vehicle being driven at high speeds and “performing dangerous stunts” in the community, which is northwest of Brandon.

As officers were searching the area at about 11:10 p.m., police were informed a pedestrian had been left with critical injuries after she was hit on a road in the community. Police found the victim, Jodi Tianna Bunn, 22, lying on the road and began first aid, but she was pronounced dead by paramedics.

Police soon found a vehicle with extensive damage parked at a home in the community and seized it for further examination. On Saturday, investigators identified the suspected driver and arrested her.

Precious Jewel Saulteaux, 33, has been charged with six driving offences, including operating a vehicle while impaired causing death and dangerous driving causing death. She’s been held in custody ahead of a Monday court appearance.

Westwood residents can resume normal electricity use: Manitoba Hydro

9:50 AM

Manitoba Hydro says customers in part of the Westwood neighbourhood, who were told last week to reduce their electricity use, can crank the power back up.

Lower temperatures are forecasted this week, which is expected to reduce demand on the system, meaning area residents can resume their typical electricity use, the public utility company said on Monday morning.

The Crown corporation said on Friday that it was putting restrictions in place over the weekend and early this week as crews work on capacity upgrades to the Cavalier substation which serves the community. The work on the substation is ongoing.

“With relief in sight from this heatwave, we can let customers in Westwood know it’s okay to resume normal use of electricity,” said Scott Powell, chief spokesman for Manitoba Hydro, in a statement.

“We did see a reduction in the load on the electrical infrastructure in this area over the last couple of days, thanks in part to the response from our Westwood customers who set thermostats a bit higher and delayed use of large appliances until after 10 pm.”

Powell thanked residents for their cooperation during the “unseasonably hot weekend,” and apologized for the inconvenience.

Approximately 1,400 customers — between Westwood Drive and Bedson Street, from Portage Avenue to the Assiniboine River — were asked on Friday to turn down their air conditioning and not use appliances like laundry machines and electric vehicle chargers before 10 p.m.

Crews douse grass fire in Whittier Park

9:09 AM

A grass fire broke out in Whittier Park in St. Boniface on Sunday evening.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said crews were called to the park, near Archibald and Mission streets, at about 4:20 p.m. and began working on the fire with specialized tools.

Trains on the nearby rail line were halted while firefighters worked. Crews got the fire under control by just before 8 p.m. No one was hurt.

The fire service has warned Winnipeg residents to take steps to avoid wildfires, which can spread quickly.

The service said residents cannot have fires, even in approved pits and with permits, when winds exceed 25 kilometres an hour. People must also never throw cigarette butts from vehicles, into brush or into plant pots. The service also warned parents to talk their children about the dangers of starting fires.
