Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a gun was discharged during an arrest in MacGregor.
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called about an intoxicated man throwing rocks at several youth on Saturday shortly before 10 p.m. One of the children was hit in the head, a Monday news release from the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said.
Officers tracked down the 33-year-old suspect in a residence in the community of MacGregor, located about 35 kilometres west of Portage.
While attempting to bring the man into custody, an officer “discharged his firearm,” the release stated.
An RCMP news release clarified the man was not shot but was injured when the gun went off.
The man was airlifted to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg by STARS air ambulance. RCMP said he was treated and released.
No further details were provided.
The IIU and RCMP are investigating.
