Kilterpalooza features a variety of activities and the unveiling of six new beers.

The event is more than just a release of new/limited-run craft beer — although it’s that as well. There’s live music throughout the day (including Tiana and George Foreman & the Grills, as well as tunes being spun by DJ Dad) plus daytime activities (noon to 6 p.m.) including a tie-dye station, temporary tattoos, outdoor games (Connect 4, giant Jenga, corn hole and tic-tac-toe), prizes and face painting.

A vendor market kicks off at noon, running to 6 p.m. or later featuring 1882 Fruit Based Hot Sauce, Happyland Print Shop, Rewind Vintage, Victory Pints and others, including Kilter’s own beer and merch store.

On the drinks front, Kilter is rolling out a bevy of new brews (six to be precise) including the Birthday Cake Oat Cream Pale Ale (featuring two kinds of hops, as well as vanilla and milk sugar), the Pickle Pils (brewed with Primo’s Deli pickle brine) and the Soak Up the Sun Hazy IPA, a collaboration with Calgary’s the Establishment Brewing Co. that features a range of dry and cryogenic hops. There will also be cocktails and cocktail slushies as well as plenty of non-alcoholic options.

For those worried about getting peckish while sipping on birthday brews, there will be hot dog and taco stand specials throughout the day.

Kilterpalooza is free for all ages, and the expanded backyard beer gardens and patios are pet-friendly. The event also includes a free bike valet.

When new management unveiled Langside Grocery 2.0 in January, they promised not much had changed. Those who piled into the freshly renovated West Broadway cocktail bar on reopening night probably first noticed the missing taxidermy — absconded after the previous owners moved on. Oh well.

But on top of redoing the menu, there are also new upstairs neighbours: Public City Architecture, who now run the restaurant and bar on the main floor to boot. The latest addition to Langside’s menu is a venue, because every Thursday the bar serves South American-flavoured jazz sets, transforming the West Broadway staple into a music space.

The chefs are Gabriela Ocejo and Kyle Cobb. They perform standards, originals and improvise into the night, sometimes with guests. Cobb is one of the city’s jazz-guitar virtuosos on the rise and the Argentine-born Ocejo (of the all-female jazz septet Juvel) is as distinctive a crooner here as any.

The Daily Show’s Josh Johnson is at the Burt Sunday for two shows.

On the current roster is American comedian Josh Johnson, who released his first HBO Max standup special, Symphony, last month. Before beginning his hour, Johnson stands under a sign reading, “If art is how we decorate space and music is how we decorate time, comedy is how we decorate reality.”

Search continues for brothers feared drowned at Nutimik Lake

Zoe Pierce 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:39 PM CDT

Search-and-rescue crews continued efforts Monday to locate two boys who are presumed drowned after falling into fast-moving rapids at Nutimik Lake on the weekend, as community members and Manitoba Parks begin conversations about preventing future tragedies.

The boys, identified as brothers Aaron Au Ramirez, 13, and Maximo Au Ramirez, 10, were visiting Whiteshell Provincial Park with their father and some friends when they entered the water near the Sturgeon Falls Trail Saturday afternoon.

Lac du Bonnet RCMP received a report of a possible drowning at about 12:40 p.m. Police, along with local emergency responders, searched the shoreline and waterways but were unable to find the boys, RCMP said in a news release.

The Manitoba RCMP Underwater Recovery Team and the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team were later deployed to assist with the search.

Nearly one in four watercraft fail inspection during roadside blitz to prevent aquatic pests

Nicole Buffie 3 minute read 2:09 PM CDT

More than 120 watercraft failed a roadside inspection over the weekend aimed at slowing the spread of aquatic invasive species, including zebra mussels.

The inspections were conducted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in partnership with the Manitoba government between July 19 and 21 on the Trans-Canada Highway at the Manitoba-Ontario border. It was the second roadside blitz of the summer season.

One of the 455 vehicles transporting 502 watercraft or related equipment had visible zebra mussels present. Inspectors found 120 watercraft were not cleaned, drained, or dried and failed the inspection. Thirteen watercraft required decontamination.

“Healthy lakes and rivers are essential to the communities that rely on them. Through joint inspection efforts with the Government of Manitoba, we are working to protect those waters from aquatic invasive species and preserve Canada’s freshwater ecosystems for generations to come,” federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said in a news release.

Sea Bears Dance Crew takes athleticism to the next level

Grace Penner 7 minute read 5:22 PM CDT

Many grow up believing dance can only be a hobby and never a career. The Sea Bears Dance Crew defies the notion by showing there can be a professional side of dance in Winnipeg.

Tasha Farmer and Kersey Sarao lead a team of 18 dancers from different backgrounds and styles. Together, they create a high-energy game-day experience — one that encourages everyone in the arena to get up and boogie.

Farmer started dancing at a young age, experimenting in all that was offered.

“I trained in ballet, lyrical, hip hop, musical theatre — every single style you can think of,” she said.
