Winnipeg has two new transitional housing facilities for women and children fleeing gender-based violence.

The first, called Standing Eagle, was finished in January. Its 11 downtown Winnipeg units are fully occupied.

Morning Light, a second housing block, is expected to be done construction this month. Occupants could fill the 15-unit building, in West Broadway, in July.

All three levels of government have put money towards the projects. The facilities were developed through Ottawa’s Rapid Housing Initiative.

Tenants can generally stay up to two years. While there, they receive on-site supports from Family Dynamics, Ikwe Widdjiitiwin and New Journey Housing.

People pay around 30 per cent of their income for the rent.
