ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Your verbal skills are great, however, parents need to cut their kids some slack as power struggles might arise. Romance can also suffer from ego conflicts and issues related to power and control. Tread carefully.

As Good As It Gets star Greg Kinnear turns 63 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Your well-meaning intentions might backfire on you when dealing with parents and authority figures. Perhaps you’re coming on a little too strong. You have definite ideas about decorating. You might also want to entertain at home. (Lighten up.)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Steer clear of conflict with others, especially about controversial subjects such as politics, religion and racial issues because they could turn into nasty arguments. The sun is in your sign and you’re powerful right now. Finances favour you. Be careful talking to others.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Try to avoid power struggles over money and financial control because these issues might arise. If it’s not about money or how to spend, it could be down to a specific possession of yours. Fortunately, with Venus in your sign, you’ll be tactful.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The moon is lined up with fair Venus making you eager to get out and socialize. In fact, you want to party. The problem is, at the same time the moon is opposite Pluto, which means you might butt heads with partners, spouses and close friends over social plans. Tread carefully.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

People admire you. Furthermore, your relations with friends and groups are warm and smooth. Nevertheless, an undercurrent might put you at odds with someone related to your work, your pet or even your health. Patience is your best friend.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You like to get along with others because you like harmony in your surroundings. Initially, you will feel warmhearted to a friend; however, a difference of opinion could lead to a clash (perhaps with your kids) that could be nasty. Use your diplomatic skills to steer through this day.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Power struggles with authority figures — parents, bosses, teachers and the police — might arise. You might also find yourself at odds with spouses, partners or close friends. (That covers quite a population.) Travel and do something different.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Power struggles with family members, parents and bosses might create challenges for you. Fortunately, you have the energy to work and get things done. If relations are challenging, then pivot and channel your energy into working for results that will please you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

It might be tough to avoid money squabbles. Initially, you have specific ideas about spending. (In fact, funds might come to you.) Unfortunately, some challenges will arise. Venus opposite your sign will save the day because you are charming with everyone right now.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You have no choice other than to co-operate with others to keep the peace and achieve what you want to do. If you can avoid power struggles and instead choose a playful outlet — socializing with friends, sports or fun activities with kids — you’ll be happier.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Struggles related to your health, parents and work might be a challenge. Instead, play hooky and escape with some fun socializing. Sporting events, fun activities with kids and romantic adventures will appeal. You might also choose to relax at home.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Greg Kinnear (1963) shares your birthday. You want to improve society. You have progressive ideas, and you’re imaginative, tenacious and persuasive. This is a year of service to others. Take care of yourself so you can be a support for those who turn to you for guidance, comfort and courage. Personalize your home.

Men cycling across Canada for mental health awareness have bikes stolen in Winnipeg

Chris Kitching 5 minute read Updated: 2:01 PM CDT

Bicycles belonging to two New Brunswick men who are cycling across Canada for mental health awareness were stolen while they did a media interview in Winnipeg’s downtown area on Friday morning.

Thomas Clark and Valentin Duquenne were devastated after the bikes went missing outside CBC Manitoba’s headquarters, but uplifted by an outpouring of support from Manitobans afterward.

“When I walked out, Tom started running towards the car and then I saw the bikes were gone. We were pretty speechless,” Duquenne, 24, said. “It’s not great. We’re kind of stranded in Winnipeg without the tools that get us across the country.”

Valued at $15,000 to $20,000, the bikes — Trek and Cannondale models — were locked on a rack on the back of a support car that was parked on Young Street, just south of Portage Avenue, when the theft happened between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. The lock was cut.

First batch of Summer Reading Challenge for Kids sees young readers weighing in

7 minute read 3:46 PM CDT

Over the past six weeks, many young bookworms have started ticking titles off the Summer Reading Challenge book lists and working on ruminative reviews to help other readers decide what page-turners to explore this summer.

Below you’ll find a selection of reviews written by kids of all ages. The only guidance they receive is a maximum word count and some tips on providing star ratings out of five; the rest is entirely up to them.

A second batch of reviews will run in print and online at the end of August, so there’s still lots of time to participate before the final deadline. To register for free, visit the Summer Reading Challenge website at wfp.to/kidsbookclub, where readers will find the three reading lists (for reading levels 7 to 9 years, 10 to 12 years and 13 to 15 years) created by McNally Robinson Booksellers as well as links to review-writing guidelines and past collections of kids’ reviews.

Once registered, you’ll receive reading guides and activities for each book, as well as information on upcoming deadlines for review submissions. Any questions can be sent to bookclub@winnipegfreepress.com.

Firefighter accused of violating protection order jailed for past harassment

Dean Pritchard 5 minute read Yesterday at 6:09 PM CDT

A Winnipeg firefighter accused of violating a protection order this week has been jailed two times in the past decade for criminally harassing two different women, court records show.

In each case, Christopher Goethals was allowed to return to his job with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

Goethals, 59, was arrested July 21 after breaching a protection order requiring he not come within 200 metres of a named protected person, police said.

Police allege Goethals was in full uniform and on “modified duties” driving a WFPS fleet vehicle at the time of the offence.
