MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Leo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a productive day! Especially if you work with children, in the arts or entertainment world, in the hospitality industry or in a sport-related field. You’ve got lots of energy! However, avoid arguments with others, as they might arise, especially with siblings and neighbours.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You’re in a practical frame of mind, which is why you can get a lot done, especially mental work. Whatever you’re doing, you will do carefully and with attention to detail. You’ll also persevere — like a dog with a bone. Avoid arguments about money or possessions. (Oops.)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Your powers of persuasion are strong, which is why you will convince others to agree with you very easily! That makes this a great day for those of you in sales, marketing, teaching or acting. However, conversations with friends and groups might be sticky. Tread carefully.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Money plans and financial discussions will go well, because you’re in a practical frame of mind. Furthermore, you’re not afraid to talk to bosses, employers and parents. Nevertheless, some kind of hidden tension is present. You might feel angry, but you’re also muzzled. (Frustrating!)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

With the moon in your sign, you’re empowered! Furthermore, it is dancing beautifully with Saturn, giving you a sober and realistic view of things. You might be less inclined to talk and more apt to plan and work. You’re also willing to put up with considerable adversity. Be patient with friends.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Your ability to see “what’s wrong with this picture” makes you an excellent critic. However, sometimes your ability to criticize and discern problems can put you at odds with others — especially bosses with egos. Tread carefully.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Discussions about travel, publishing, the media, medicine, the law and anything to do with education will be productive. However, you might run into problems with people who object, especially if you touch on controversial topics. A partner or friend will support you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

For the most part, this is an excellent day to make your pitch in asking for permission or approval, especially for something related to your work, health or a pet. Discussions about your property and inheritances are another matter. Here’s where the gauntlet will be thrown down.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You love to travel, and this is a great day to make plans to do so because you’re in a practical frame of mind. You won’t overlook details and you have the perseverance to deal with the changing landscape. Be patient with partners and close friends to avoid tiffs.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

If you want to make a claim or fight for your fair share of something, this is the day to do so because you will find your facts and be prepared. Nevertheless, work-related issues might be challenged. Do your homework and get your ducks in a row.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is a wonderful day to shmooz even if people choose to have serious discussions. You might get a lot done, especially when talking to siblings, relatives and neighbours. Practical matters can be addressed. Meanwhile, be patient with kids and romantic partners.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You can make great headway at work because you’re in a solid frame of mind. Your critical faculties are sharp along with your ability to make long-range plans. Avoid conflicts with family members. (Patience is your best friend.)

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Richard Madden (1986) shares your birthday. You are loyal, energetic, attractive and adventurous. You have a quirky sense of fun. This is a year of learning and teaching. Take time to renew your spiritual or religious beliefs. Explore philosophies that give you better self-awareness and get you closer to the true meaning of your life.

Exclusive: In a Ukrainian bomb shelter, Laura Loomer explains shift on Russia’s war

Illia Novikov, Volodymr Yurchuk And Jill Colvin, The Associated Press 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:36 PM CDT

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Laura Loomer became infamous for spreading conspiracy theories online. Now, as she travels across Ukraine to see the damage inflicted by Russia in its yearslong war, she wants to admit that she fell for some falsehoods of her own.

A close ally of President Donald Trump, Loomer has completely reversed her longtime criticism of Ukraine and is urging fellow conservatives to be wary of Moscow's propaganda, which she blames for duping large swaths of the American right.

“You don’t need to listen to a podcaster and let them influence your opinion about a country. You can look at those facts yourself,” she told The Associated Press in Kyiv shortly after returning from a trip close to the front line in Ukraine's east. The interview was supposed to take place in Loomer's hotel, but it had to be moved to the building's underground bomb shelter as the city faced another ballistic missile attack.

Loomer has remained influential with Trump despite not having an official role, and she said they spoke over the phone after she sat down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She also said that she expects to meet with Trump after returning from her trip.

Vacant Bay store on road to redevelopment, St. Vital Centre owner says

Gabrielle Piche 6 minute read Friday, Jul. 24, 2026

Entertainment attractions are coming to fill the former Hudson’s Bay space in St. Vital Centre.

Montreal-based real estate firm Leyad, the south Winnipeg mall’s owner, says it is finalizing an agreement for the vacant property. Further details should appear in the next couple months, said president Henry Zavriyev.

“We’re looking at what other types of experiences we can bring to the mall that aren’t just typical retail,” he said during a visit to Winnipeg this week.

“We want to create an experience where you can just come to the mall, hang out here for hours, no matter if you’re a kid, an adult, a retiree.”

Up to the challenge

There may not be another restaurant in Manitoba that can say it has welcomed visitors from as many communities across the province and beyond as the Somerset Food Bar & Lounge has this summer.

In just over a two week span, visitors from more than 100 towns have come out to the family-owned restaurant tucked away in Somerset, a community of roughly 450 people in the Pembina Valley 130 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

It started as a challenge, “60 Towns in 60 Days,” where the restaurant wanted to document how many different places they could reach, as it often sees people travelling across Canada stop at the restaurant. The goal was also to encourage people to make a drive they normally wouldn’t.

“The more we started sharing, the more people really started getting behind it, and it turned into this really big thing fairly quickly,” said Jay Friesen, restaurant manager.

Man, 20, faces charges in street-racing incident

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:37 PM CDT

Speeding drivers were racing through Elmwood at up to 200 km/h overnight, Winnipeg police say.

Around 2 a.m. July 26, police got reports of a Corvette and other vehicles racing along Disraeli Freeway. Using the Winnipeg Police Service's helicopter, officers monitored the vehicles and recorded speeds, including vehicles crossing the Nairn overpass at up to 200 km/hr.

Officers with the central traffic unit tried to pull over a Jeep and a Corvette at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Regent Avenue. The driver of the Corvette didn't stop and sped past police, eventually stopping in the 100 block of Johnson Avenue where the driver and passenger got out and ran.

The K9 unit tracked the suspects to the 100 block of Poplar Avenue. One of them was taken down by a police dog and received medical attention. Both were taken into custody.

Conservatives call for emergency meeting on Trump threats, demand Carney explain plan

The Canadian Press 1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:16 AM CDT

OTTAWA - The Conservative shadow minister for Canada-U.S. relations is calling on Ottawa to provide its negotiation plan with U.S. President Donald Trump at an emergency meeting.

Shuv Majumdar says in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney that the Conservatives want an emergency meeting of the Standing Committee on International Trade next week, and Ottawa needs to table its written plans at the hearings.

Majumdar says Carney must explain how the government will address Trump's latest tariff threat.

Trump said Monday the U.S. government will hit an array of Canadian products with 50 per cent tariffs in 30 days.
