Global medical device company Arthrex is playing a role in the creation of Winnipeg’s new downtown health-care centre.
It’s been asked to help design the operating rooms and equipment found in the Health-Care Centre of Excellence, in the redeveloped Portage Place, said Arthrex founder Reinhold Schmieding.
He was in Winnipeg last month to receive the International Distinguished Entrepreneur Award, given by the Associates of the Asper School of Business, a University of Manitoba alumni group.
Arthrex has developed at least 25,600 surgical devices and implants. Its products are used in minimally invasive surgeries.
The company has worked for years with Dr. Peter MacDonald, an orthopaedic surgeon at Pan Am Clinic. The Pan Am will undergo an expansion in the new downtown centre.
In a statement, MacDonald said Pan Am Clinic continues to work with partners including Arthrex.
Neither he nor True North Real Estate Development, who’s leading the facility’s creation, provided further details.
The 300,000-square-foot centre has a target completion date of 2028, per a 2024 announcement timeline.
