Counsell, a Liberal, was later appointed to the Senate by former prime minister Jean Chrétien in 2003, serving there until 2008.

The funeral took place at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., and was open to the public.

Counsell died on June 17 in Sackville at the age of 92.

Lt.-Gov. Louise Imbeault, in a statement, said Counsell “left an indelible mark on New Brunswick.”

“She will remain a source of inspiration and a role model for all those who aim to be changemakers in their communities.”
