Winnipegger Woo picked in sixth round of NHL draft

A fourth Manitoban has been selected in this year’s NHL draft

Winnipeg’s Jonas Woo was picked in the sixth round, 185th-overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

The undersized 19-year-old defenceman spent last season with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, putting up  86 points (29G, 57A) in 56 regular season games and adding 17 points (8G, 9A) in 13 playoff games.

His older brother, Jett, was picked by the Vancouver Canucks in the second round of the 2018 draft but has yet to make his NHL debut, spending his first six pro seasons at the AHL level.

Two teenagers charged in slaying of 16-year-old boy

City police have charged two teenagers with second-degree murder after officers found a 16-year-old boy dead in the St. James Industrial neighbourhood Thursday morning.

Police responded to a request for a wellbeing check at a parking lot on the 1700 block of Wellington Avenue around 8 a.m., where they found the youth dead after suffering “significant injuries,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Saturday.

Later that day, homicide investigators arrested a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl at a business on the 600 block of King Edward Street and charged them in connection to the crime, WPS said.

Jets draft goaltender in third round

The Winnipeg Jets have added a goalie to their prospect pool.

Samuel Hrenak was selected in the third round, 71st-overall, on Saturday. The 18-year-old is from Slovakia and plays for the Fargo Force in the USHL. He is 6-3 and had a 7-1-1 record in nine games last season along with 2.20 goals against average and .918 save percentage.

The Jets chose Swedish centre Viggo Bjorck with the eighth-overall pick on Friday night. Winnipeg is set to make five other selections in the later rounds on Saturday.

Pair of Manitoba skaters drafted on Saturday

Two more Manitobans heard their names called as the NHL draft continued Saturday.

Defenceman Brek Liske was selected in the second round, 53rd-overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers. The Beausejour product spent last season with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, with 24 points (7G, 17A) in 52 regular season games and 17 points (4G, 13A) in 18 playoff games.

Forward Zachary Lansard, the pride of Ste. Anne, was then picked in the third round, 68th-overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes. He plays for the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League and had 56 points (24G, 32A) in 68 regular season games and three points (3G, 0A) in five playoff games.

Defenceman Carson Carels was chosen sixth-overall by the Calgary Flames during Friday’s first round. The Cypress River native played for the Prince George Cougars of the WHL last season.
