Freaky Friday star Lindsay Lohan is 40 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You’re high-viz. People notice you more than usual. However, this also means some people know personal details about your private life. Beware aware of this in case you have to do some damage control. A discussion with a boss will go well.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is the perfect day to do something different. Shake things up a little. If you can’t travel, then be a tourist in your own city, which can be enlightening and fun. Read books, see films and talk to people who can broaden your world.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You are fortunate because the sun is in your sign, which will help any discussions about shared property, taxes, debt and inheritances go in your favour. Authority figures will help out and support your ideas or give you permission.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

A conversation with a partner, spouse or close friend will focus on practical matters, perhaps related to travel, legal or medical issues, or publishing. Whatever the case, these discussions will be down-to-earth and sensible. Learn what you can.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’ll be productive at work or with any task you set for yourself, because you’re in a practical frame of mind. Make a list and tackle it. Advice from someone older or more experienced might help you. You might apply this energy to improve your health.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

A practical approach to matters related to sports, taking care of kids, planning vacations and making or creating art will give you results. Half of the problem is attitude and planning, and you have this in abundance as your mind is focused and detail-oriented.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Family discussions will be productive. You might talk to a parent, older family member or a number of relatives. This could relate to long-range plans for the home or for a family member. Disputes about shared property might be an issue. With Venus high in your chart, you’ll be diplomatic.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is the perfect day to learn or study something new because your mind is focused and you will pay attention to detail. You will more easily retain what you’re learning. Discussions with older or more experienced people will go well. Be patient with partners, spouses and close friends.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You will be conservative and careful about your spending. Of course, as a general rule, you don’t like waste. But you might want to buy long-lasting, practical things, or maintain what you own to preserve or extend their use. An older family member might have advice for you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The moon is in your sign, which gives you a slight advantage over other signs. Things will tend to go your way. You can test this by asking for what you want. Discussions with others will be serious and practical. Decide to get a lot done because this is possible.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Keep a low profile. Rest if you can. This is a playful, fun-loving time for you, in addition to which, it’s also a productive time because employees and friends are supportive of you. Behind-the-scenes-research will pay off.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actress Lindsay Lohan (1986) shares your birthday. You’re sensitive, protective and perceptive. You want what is good for others. This is a year of new beginnings, adventures and major changes in your life. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities. What you do now will bring great benefits in the future. Stay flexible.

Longtime Assiniboine Park Zoo resident Blizzard the bison dies

Zoe Pierce 2 minute read Friday, Jul. 24, 2026

Blizzard, the white bison that became one of Assiniboine Park Zoo’s most recognizable residents during nearly 20 years at the facility, has died, the zoo announced Friday.

The zoo said Blizzard’s health declined in recent weeks, so a diagnostic exam was recommended to better understand his condition. He died during the procedure.

Blizzard arrived at Assiniboine Park Zoo in 2006 and went on to become a favourite among visitors, inspiring “millions of visitors with his remarkable presence,” the zoo said in a social media post.

“While all animals in our care are deeply valued, Blizzard held a special place in the hearts of many people and carried profound cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous peoples,” the post reads.

Daycare grapples with five-year-old’s outbursts, choking incidents

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Friday, Jul. 24, 2026

A Windsor Park child-care facility is weighing a five-year-old’s right to care versus the safety of other children who have been choked.

Little People’s Place expelled a pre-schooler in the spring in response to his aggressive behaviour toward other children and staff.

The child’s family has appealed to the province for him to be reinstated.

The case is raising concerns about inclusion support resources and measures to protect everyone at the Cottonwood Road daycare.

Trailblazer returns to share success, inspire next generation

Grace Penner 6 minute read Yesterday at 5:14 PM CDT

Starstruck kids and fans zigzagged throughout the rink, anxiously waiting to get an autograph from Kati Tabin and to see their role model on the same side of the glass.

Tabin, Montreal Victoire defender and Team Canada silver medallist, on Saturday came home to the rink where it all began, the Oakbank Community Club. She brought the PWHL championship trophy, the Walter Cup, won in her third season with the club, as well as her 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic medal.

The arena was packed to the brim with fans from all over coming to see Tabin — the local player who made history in women’s hockey. Hundreds of enthusiasts of all ages lined up with their Victoire or Team Canada merchandise, some waiting over two hours to see their idol.

Eight-year-old Loxley Cierzan came with her mother, Ainsley, and other family members to meet the one and only Tabin. Cierzan has loved seeing other girls grace the ice and play the competitive sport she adores. When the PWHL takeover stopped in Winnipeg in March, she not only got to watch the game but also a practice beforehand where Tabin signed her Victoire hat.

Sked dread a summer bummer for mom

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I’m a working mom in my 50s and I love Winnipeg in the summer — all the cultural festivals, concerts and crazy events it has to offer.

So I told my 20-something kids I would come out to our lake cabin for only a couple of June and July weekends, but then join them out there with their dad as well for an unbroken two-week stretch in late-August.

However, I worry I’ll just be cooking and organizing while I’m out there! My bossy eldest daughter made up a cooking schedule, so everybody has a special dinner where they have cook, organize people to bring things, run the barbecue and entertain with a group game afterwards. It’s going well for July, but nobody has signed up for duties in August when we’ll all be out there to enjoy the last of the summer.

I spent summer after summer covering that entire duty calendar for my kids, so it’d be nice to actually relax when I’m out there later this year. So, now what?
