Beers & Braids / SUPPLIED

Beers & Braids at Sookram’s helps dads and father figures bond with their daughters through hair care. Bookings are open for July 27.

Local makeup artist Ren Cherlet launched the classes early this spring after noticing single fathers in her circle were finding it difficult to do their daughters’ hair for extra-curricular activities.

For two hours, dads and/or father figures wield brushes alongside their brews as they tackle various hairstyles on mannequins. Each class at the brewery is capped at 20 people to ensure everyone gets enough time to learn and practise their newfound skills as Cherlet and her assistant walk around helping those who are struggling to master a specific style.

The sessions are so popular that next week’s class is sold out and there is currently a waitlist for the July 22 event. The ticket price includes one beverage. There are currently classes scheduled until November this year. Check the website for more information and event details.

Live Band Karaoke

  • WAG-Qaumajuq, 300 Memorial Blvd.
  • Tonight, 8 p.m.
  • $20

Live Band Karaoke insists they did it on purpose: schedule their upcoming show on the Winnipeg Folk Fest’s opening day.

“Yes, we’re coming for you Father John Misty, your ass is grass,” says guitarist and host Rory Ellis in a recent Instagram story.

The famous FJM plays the folk fest’s main stage tonight at 9:30 p.m. Winnipeggers skipping that can instead enjoy their 15 minutes of fame at Live Band Karaoke’s show on the WAG’s rooftop tonight, which runs a full three hours.

The band has, somehow, managed to memorize about 100 songs from the past 50 years or so of the power ballad cannon — and welcomes folks to take the mic and sing along with a real band rather than the usual canned backing tracks. Check their Instagram page (@livebandkaraokewpg) for a set-list, which ranges from the Beatles to Nirvana to Dua Lipa.

If you want to take centre stage, you’re encouraged to message the band first via IG. You can also sign up at the event at 7:30 p.m. Otherwise you’ll have a hoot from the audience, from the WAG’s Tyndall stone rootop sculpture garden.

Maddie’s Secret

  • Dave Barber Cinematheque, 100 Arthur St.
  • Friday to Thursday
  • Tickets: $12.50

You might not know John Early’s name, but you know his game. Since appearing in a 2012 episode of 30 Rock as Jenna Maroney’s bitchy son Jerome, the actor and comedian has been featured in dozens of alt-comedy gems, including the stoner anthology series High Maintenance, the Comedy Central totem Broad City, the Wet Hot American Summer series and in a leading role as Elliot in the absolutely bonkers cult series Search Party. In any project, Early’s presence is a signifier of both camp and brutally, hilariously applied self-awareness, and by all accounts, his directorial debut is no different.

John Early in Maddie’s Secret, which screens at Cinematheque Friday to Thursday.

In Maddie’s Secret — dubbed a “leaning tower of camp” by RogerEbert.com — the screenwriter Early stars as Maddie Ralph, who achieves overnight success as an online home chef, a development which leads her to spiral back into painful patterns of eating disorder cycles. With a supporting cast of internet comedy icons like Kate Berlant, Connor O’Malley and Eric Rahill, Maddie’s Secret will inevitably serve as a Rosetta Stone for a generation of comedy nerds.

Elmhurst golfer carries four stroke lead into final round of Mid-Am

Joshua Frey-Sam 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:57 PM CDT

Evan Nachtigall wouldn’t call it a perfect day of golf, but it was pretty darn close for the Elmhurst member.

The 25-year-old holds the solo lead at 9-under par in the provincial Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship after a 36-hole opening day at Quarry Oaks in Steinbach on Tuesday.

Nachtigall, the reigning Men’s Golfer of the Year, carded a four-under 68 on his opening 18 on the strength of four birdies and an eagle, then did one better on his second time out, firing a bogey-free five-under 67 in gusty conditions.

“It’s been a good day,” said Nachtigall, who won the 2025 Men’s Amateur Championship. “I feel like I really stayed patient out there. Definitely frustrated on the greens, for sure. I felt like I probably had at least 20 good looks at birdie out there today, and I’m just burning edges. But at the end of the day, nine-under through two rounds, I’ll take it.”

Disciplinary hearing centres on teacher’s 15-second hug with student

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read Yesterday at 10:08 PM CDT

School security camera footage of a nearly 15-second hug between a teacher and one of her students was repeatedly screened and scrutinized at a historic hearing.

“This isn’t a fleeting or a casual embrace. The two were comfortable with each other,” teacher commissioner lawyer Tristan Sandulak told a professional disciplinary panel on Tuesday.

Sandulak made a case for cancelling Janice Wen Ying Ma’s teaching certificate, citing the early career educator’s alleged conduct and “credibility issues.”

The lawyer presented on behalf of Noni Classen, the independent commissioner who oversees Manitoba’s new teacher registry, during a videoconference that took up much of the day.

Landlord miffed after city orders cleanup of riverside homeless camp

Scott Billeck 6 minute read Yesterday at 6:26 PM CDT

A West Broadway landlord is angry the City of Winnipeg has ordered him to clear away a homeless encampment from his riverfront property or have the cleanup cost added to his property tax bill.

Marvin Sharp, CEO of Astroid Management Ltd., which manages the Pen-Eve Apartments at 35 Balmoral St., said the city is forcing private property owners to deal with a problem they didn’t create.

“This is kind of like the neighbours throwing their garbage over the fence, every single day, and the city’s saying, ‘You have to go clean this up, but we’re not going to go tell the neighbour to stop doing that,’” Sharp said. “What do you want me to do here? You’ve got a serious problem here. We’re not talking about someone throwing garbage on the ground. We’re talking about encampments.”

Sharp said he received a city compliance order on July 10 order, which was viewed by the Free Press. It says a bylaw officer observed “an accumulation of garbage” on the property, including abandoned goods of manufacture, tents and unattended shopping carts.

Plan being developed to tackle drug use, homelessness near church

Scott Billeck 4 minute read Monday, Jul. 20, 2026

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham says a plan is in the works to address growing concerns over drug use and homelessness around an Osborne Village church after complaints from a nearby daycare, residents and businesses.

Gillingham said his senior adviser on homelessness, Jarred Baker, met with people in the area on Friday and was expected to provide a report later Monday outlining what was discussed and potential next steps.

Craig Wynands, executive director of 1JustCity, confirmed someone from the city met with Oak Table’s site lead, Thomas van der Krogt. Wynands also said he met Monday with officials from Augustine Centre and SPLASH Child Care.

“We discussed safety measures and increasing staff presence around the premises of the building,” he said. “1JustCity will be hiring additional staff to patrol the property regularly during the day.”
