MOON ALERT: Caution! Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. today. After that, the moon moves from Taurus into Gemini.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Financial discussions will go well; nevertheless, be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert. (See above.) Do your homework. Toss ideas back and forth with someone, but wait until tomorrow to commit to anything in terms of purchases or decisions.

Modern Family star Sofía Vergara is 54 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a good day to wrap up old matters and loose ends because things will tend to go in your favour for most of the day. Nevertheless, there’s a moon alert in effect, which means restricting spending to food and gas and waiting until tomorrow to make important decisions.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You want to keep a low profile, which is why you might choose to work alone. Nevertheless, with fiery Mars in your sign, you’re still ready to defend your best interests. (“Hey, I’m more than a pretty face.”) Be aware there’s a moon alert in effect all day, so restrict spending to food and gas.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is the perfect day to shmooz! But don’t agree to anything important during the moon alert, which is in effect almost all day. Shoot the breeze. Exchange ideas. Gather data but wait until tomorrow to act. Enjoy relaxing with others.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You’re high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. Be aware there’s a moon alert in effect all day. (See above.) Don’t volunteer for anything. Chat with others and do your homework, but commit to nothing. Restrict spending to food and gas.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You need a change of scenery! Do something different, because you’re restless for adventure. Enjoy socializing and talking to people from different backgrounds. Because there’s a moon alert in effect all day, restrict spending to food and gas. Postpone important decisions until tomorrow.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might be involved in discussions about inheritances, shared property, taxes or debt. Please be aware there’s a moon alert all day, which means it’s a poor time to make decisions or commitments. Restrict spending to food and gas (see above).

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Be co-operative with others, because with the moon opposite your sign, you will have to go along to get along. Furthermore, there’s a moon alert in effect almost all day, so restrict spending to food and gas. Get your data, but wait until tomorrow to commit.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re charming to everyone right now because Venus is at the top of your chart. Meanwhile, you might have to work for the benefit of someone else. Make no important decisions or commitments. There’s a moon alert in effect all day. Restrict spending to food and gas.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

It’s a playful day! Welcome any chance to make art or explore your creative talents. This is also a lovely day to shmooz! Nevertheless, there’s a moon alert all day, so restrict spending to food and gas. (Remember to get more rest.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Quiet time at home will please you. (You might wrap up loose ends.) Family discussions about old matters might arise. Meanwhile, there’s a moon alert in effect all day. Restrict spending to food and gas, and postpone important decisions.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You have a strong desire to share your ideas with someone. You have something to say. This is actually a creative, social day; however, there’s a moon alert in effect all day. Therefore, restrict spending to food and gas.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Sofía Vergara (1972) shares your birthday. You have an analytical, practical mind. You’re determined, observant and detail-oriented. Because this is the last year of a nine-year cycle, it’s time to take inventory. Let go of people, places and things from the past that have held you back. Do some internal and external housecleaning. Focus on being compassionate.

Former teacher would suit up with Bombers in just ninth game of three-down loop career

In a way, Micah Vanterpool’s brief stint as a Grade 3 teacher in his hometown of Tulsa, Okla., prepared him for life in the CFL.

The third-year offensive lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers only has eight career games on his resumé as he has bounced around between the practice roster, starting lineup and injury report.

But thanks to his time in the classroom, he’s developed the patience that’s required by a young American trying to make a name for oneself in the three-down loop.

Vanterpool got into teaching after failing to make the New England Patriots in 2023. He said goodbye to the education profession the following year and took his talents up north to Winnipeg.

$129-M segregation-lawsuit deal good for Manitoba: judge

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Yesterday at 5:48 PM CDT

A judge has said the $129-million class-action settlement that must be paid by the Manitoba government over the use of segregation in provincial jails is a good deal for taxpayers.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Theodor Bock approved the settlement — in which the province didn’t admit liability — in June, before issuing his full written decision July 22.

“Although Manitoba is responsible to fund a significant settlement, it benefits considerably from the certainty created by capping its total liability to the class, the release of all claims, costs saved or avoided altogether as a result of the appointment of Proactio as the claims administrator and the development of the agreed-upon claims process, and the discontinuance of all litigation concerning this matter,” he wrote.

The judge said class members “comprise a group of vulnerable and marginalized people who endured significant periods of segregation, some under very severe conditions.”

Mayor backs new way to handle 911 mental health, addiction calls

Malak Abas 7 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:47 PM CDT

Mayor Scott Gillingham is enthusiastically endorsing a proposal to change the city’s crisis-response system, potentially diverting 10,000 calls away from overburdened police, fire and paramedic services every year.

The “fourth crisis response pathway” would allow 911 calls that aren’t violent or criminal in nature to be transferred to citywide crisis-response teams, staffed in part through current community resources, which could include the Downtown Community Safety Partnership and The Link’s mobile crisis teams.

A community crisis dispatch and co-ordination hub would receive triaged calls and match them with the teams, which would move them out of the Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service calls for service.

“Every day, our 911 dispatchers receive calls from Winnipeggers who are in distress, dealing with complex mental health struggles, addiction, or wellness concerns,” Gillingham said after releasing a report on the proposal Tuesday.

Sottobraccio brings Harth’s Italian flavours to new location in Osborne Village

Eva Wasney 4 minute read Yesterday at 5:21 PM CDT

Sottobraccio is the answer to a common refrain at Harth Mozza & Wine Bar.

“The No. 1 thing we always hear from guests at Harth is, ‘We love coming here, but it’s such a drive,’” chef Brent Genyk says of his popular fine-dining restaurant in South St. Vital.

Harth’s new sister restaurant opened in the heart of Osborne Village in June, joining a raft of other eateries that have moved into the central Winnipeg neighbourhood in recent years.

Sottobraccio is located at 160 Osborne St. in the main floor of the Zü, a new retail and residential complex built on the former site of the Osborne Village Motor Inn and its well-known music venue, the Zoo.
