Man dead, woman critically injured after single-vehicle rollover in Sagkeeng

One man is dead and a woman is fighting for her life after they were ejected from an SUV during a single-vehicle rollover in Sagkeeng First Nation early Saturday morning.

Mounties from the Powerview detachment responded to the crash around 5 a.m. and arrived on scene to find the vehicle’s occupants lying on the road with serious injuries, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

One of the victims, a 30-year-old man from Sagkeeng, died Monday as a result of injuries suffered during the collision. A 19-year-old woman, also from the First Nation, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, the release said.

Police believe the SUV was travelling east on North Shore Road when it left the roadway and rolled into the ditch. Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Investigators have not determined who was driving, RCMP said.

Police to report Tuesday on Linden Woods shooting

The Winnipeg Police Service will hold a news conference Tuesday to provide details about a shooting involving an officer in the Linden Woods neighbourhood Monday night.

No other details have been released.

The 1 p.m. news conference will be livestreamed on the WPS’s YouTube page.

Cyclist struck, critically injured in North End

A cyclist was critically injured Monday night after colliding with a vehicle near the intersection of Dufferin Avenue and Salter Street.

Police responded to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. and found the cyclist seriously injured. They were transported to the hospital and remain in critical condition, Winnipeg Police Service Const. Pat Saydak said Tuesday.

Police did not provide additional information. The investigation is ongoing.

Winnipeg awarded Northern Super League franchise for 2027

Professional women’s soccer is coming to Winnipeg.

The Northern Super League announced today that Winnipeg has been awarded the league’s seventh franchise, with the club set to begin play in the 2027 season.

The franchise is co-founded by Winnipeg native and former Canadian international Desiree Scott, who will serve as vice-president of community and player experience, and Rob Gale, who will be the club’s chief sporting officer.

“It is an honour to bring professional women’s soccer of this calibre to Winnipeg and to join a trailblazing organization like the Northern Super League,” Scott said in a news release.

Following a successful inaugural campaign that helped establish professional women’s soccer in communities across Canada, the addition of Winnipeg represents the next step in the league’s strategic growth as the Northern Super League expands from six to seven teams.

The club’s official name, crest and home venue have yet to be announced. Front-office operations and community engagement strategies are already underway. Season ticket deposits are available beginning today at Winnipeg.nsl.ca for supporters who previously signed a petition backing the club, with deposits opening to the general public Friday at 10 a.m. Central.

Further details about the club’s branding, coaching staff, president and stadium partnership will be announced at a later date.
