Woman charged after security guard assaulted with knife during Portage Avenue robbery

A 39-year-old woman has been charged after police say a retail theft attempt led to a knife being used against a security guard at a store on Portage Avenue.

The Winnipeg Police Service said Central District General Patrol officers arrested the woman at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in connection with a robbery at a retail store in the 300 block of Portage Avenue.

Police said the woman entered the store shortly before 2 p.m. and attempted to steal merchandise before being confronted by store security. Police said the suspect then brandished a knife and assaulted a security guard.

Security was able to gain control of the suspect, and police were contacted.

The 24-year-old security guard suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment.

The woman has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. She was detained in custody.

Loaded handgun recovered after foot chase in Lord Selkirk Park neighbourhood, 19-year-old charged

A 19-year-old man has been charged after police recovered a loaded handgun during a foot chase in Winnipeg’s Lord Selkirk Park neighbourhood Friday night.

The Winnipeg Police Service said officers from the North District were patrolling the 400 block of King Street at about 8:45 p.m. on Friday when they saw a vehicle parked with its doors open and more than a dozen males gathered around it.

Police said some of the individuals were wearing face coverings.

As officers approached the group, they recognized one of the men. Police said the man displayed characteristics of someone who may have been armed, prompting a weapons-related investigation.

During a safety search, police said the suspect ran from officers. After a brief foot chase, he was taken into custody, and a loaded Glock handgun fell out of his waistband.

No other arrests were made.

The 19-year-old has been charged with multiple firearm-related offences and resisting a peace officer. He was detained in custody.

Man charged after random stabbing of wheelchair user in Winnipeg

A 38-year-old man has been charged after a person using a wheelchair was stabbed in a random assault on Selkirk Avenue Friday afternoon, Winnipeg police say.

Officers from the Winnipeg Police Service’s North District responded to a stabbing in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue at approximately 2 p.m. on July 24.

Police said the victim, a man in his 20s, was sitting in a wheelchair in a courtyard when an unknown man approached unexpectedly and stabbed him.

The suspect fled but was quickly located and taken into custody in the 100 block of Powers Street.

Police provided emergency medical care to the victim before he was transported to hospital in unstable condition. His condition was later upgraded to stable.

A 38-year-old man has been charged with assault with a weapon and was detained in custody.

Impaired collision in St. Norbert leads to two arrests, firearms and drugs seized

A woman and toddler were taken to hospital after a two-vehicle collision in St. Norbert Friday night that led to two men being arrested and the seizure of firearms and drugs, Winnipeg police say.

The Winnipeg Police Service responded to the collision in the 3000 block of Pembina Highway at approximately 8 p.m. on July 24. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was already on scene when police arrived.

Police said additional information indicated two male occupants from one of the vehicles were removing bags from the vehicle and hiding them near a nearby hotel.

Officers from the West District searched the area and found one of the suspects and a bag containing a .22-calibre semi-automatic rifle and a loaded magazine.

Police said the 17-year-old male was also found in possession of two CO2-powered pistols, crack cocaine and drug packaging materials.

The teenager is facing multiple firearm and drug trafficking-related charges and was detained in custody.

With assistance from WFPS, canine unit and AIR1, police located a second man stumbling through a field and took him into custody. The 33-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving and firearm-related offences and was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Police said a search of the suspect vehicle uncovered additional methamphetamine and cocaine, with approximately 135 grams of drugs seized in total.

The 33-year-old man is also facing multiple firearm and drug trafficking-related charges, as well as charges related to impaired driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and an outstanding RCMP warrant for assault and uttering threats. He was detained in custody.

The woman and toddler from the other vehicle were transported to hospital in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
