TORONTO – J. Cole is still thinking about the six points he scored in Scarborough.

The North Carolina rapper brought up his brief stint with the Scarborough Shooting Stars several times during his Toronto concert Monday, joking about his modest basketball stat line while reflecting on the deeper connection he made with the city.

“I used to play ball up in Scarborough,” Cole told the crowd at Scotiabank Arena, drawing loud cheers. “Go to YouTube, I scored six points for the Scarborough Shooting Stars, man. Two for two!”

Cole signed with the Canadian Elite Basketball League team in 2022, making five appearances in one of the more unexpected chapters of his career.

On Monday, the Grammy winner told the crowd the experience meant more to him than just a chance to play professional basketball.

“When I was scoring those six points, you know, for Scarborough — I think my average was probably like 1.5 a game — when I was doing that, I really got a chance to live here for the first time,” the 41-year-old said.

“That’s a beautiful thing.”

Cole said he had grown to love Toronto and praised the city’s cultural identity

“I love y’all city so much, man,” he said. “I know where y’all from, I respect where y’all from. I love it. Y’all should be very proud of yourselves in this city, culturally.”

He also quipped that Toronto fans should remember his Scarborough performance while forgetting what happened later in his basketball career.

The “No Role Modelz” rapper played one game for the Nanjing Monkey Kings of the Chinese Basketball Association in April, logging eight minutes and finishing with zero points, one rebound and one assist before returning to the U.S. amid delays with his work visa.

“Just act like you didn’t see what I did in China, though. Just erase that,” Cole said.

“Act like Scarborough was my last game.”

The Shooting Stars are co-owned by Nicholas Carino, a founding member of Drake’s lifestyle brand and record label, October’s Very Own. Drake and Cole have collaborated in the past, though their relationship appeared to cool after Cole withdrew from Drake’s rap feud with Kendrick Lamar in 2024.

Cole initially sided with the Toronto rapper in his track “7 Minute Drill,” but later apologized for the song and removed it from streaming services, saying he didn’t feel good about taking shots at Lamar.

Drake seemingly references Cole’s decision to bow out of the feud several times on “Iceman,” one of his latest albums.

“I’d much rather death than submission / How can you press the ignition and let some memories of the past affect your decision? / I love you ‘cause of the history, but if we bein’ real, I could never forgive you,” he raps on the track “Make Them Pay.”

Cole returns to Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday as part of the Fall-Off World Tour and heads to Vancouver next month.

QDoc patients in tight spot over billing dispute

Chris Kitching 6 minute read Thursday, Sep. 3, 2026

Manitobans have been pulled into a dispute between QDoc — a Winnipeg-based virtual health-care platform — and the NDP government over fees billed to the province for patient care.

An Aug. 24 email from QDoc to its users prompted concern or calls for clarity from Manitobans who use the 24-7 platform to see a physician or nurse practitioner through encrypted video calls.

“When I first read it, like many others, I assumed they were going to be nixing the service altogether because that’s the way it was presented,” Tyndall resident Stephanie Pituley said.

“Upon further research, obviously that’s not the case, but I am still concerned to be honest. How many people did that research, I don’t know.”

Shared Health urges surgical patients to get tests ASAP as Dynacare strike looms

Shared Health issued an urgent call Friday to surgical patients who require bloodwork to get it done before Dynacare stops collecting blood on noon Saturday — three days before lab workers are set to go on strike.

The company, which conducts blood tests at 22 outlets in Winnipeg, Brandon and surrounding communities, is locked in a contract battle with the union that represents its 350 workers.

Health officials warned that any disruption would significantly impair the health-care system.

Shared Health said Friday its officials, as well as regional health authorities, CancerCare Manitoba and the government have been working together to prepare for the walkout.

Mighty Mikee returns to Assiniboia Downs in grand fashion with 23-length victory

George Williams 5 minute read Yesterday at 8:44 PM CDT

Mighty Mikee is back, and in a big way.

The grey Manitoba-bred three-year-old won the $40,000 J. W. Sifton Stakes by 23 lengths on Tuesday for trainer Devon Gittens. Not only was his margin of victory the largest in North America on the day, but the time was sizzling fast. He was like the Mighty Mikee of old.

“That brought tears to my eyes,” said breeder Larry Falloon, who co-owns the horse with Anne Champion and McLaren Racing.

Last year’s co-champion CTHS Horse of the Year as a two-year-old off the strength of three wins. including the $40,000 CTHS Sales Stakes and the $40,000 Buffalo Stakes, Mighty Mikee was transferred to the barn of another trainer for the start of this season. After finishing last twice and second last once, he was transferred back to Gittens.

Westwood standoff ends with two arrested

Morgan Modjeski and Erik Pindera 3 minute read Thursday, Sep. 3, 2026

An hours-long standoff in Westwood came to an end Thursday with Winnipeg police arresting two men and seizing a gun.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were called to Byrd Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m. after a man was seen walking with what appeared to be a firearm, said police spokesman Const. Claude Chancy.

Officers identified a home connected to the investigation, he said.

Two men were arrested but Chancy could not yet say what they will be charged with. It’s not clear whether either of the men arrested was the male spotted with a gun.

Klein put on defensive as mayoral run made official

Malak Abas 7 minute read Thursday, Sep. 3, 2026

Kevin Klein faced a barrage of attacks from the city’s incumbent mayor and largest union as he officially entered Winnipeg’s mayoral race Thursday.

While the former city councillor and Progressive Conservative cabinet minister was registering to run at city hall, Mayor Scott Gillingham’s team sent out a news release noting Klein was one of two councillors to vote against pursuing legal action against participants in the Winnipeg police headquarters scandal.

Shortly after, Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500 accused Klein of blaming Canada for its ongoing trade war with the U.S. and called him an “unfit” candidate who would “bend a knee to American interests” in a news release of its own.

Klein defended himself outside city hall after putting in his papers.

Don’t settle for being ‘reasonable facsimile’

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I always fall in love when the leaves start turning to fall colours. But, this year I have a big problem that could get me in terrible trouble. My heart is burning for a guy I can’t have — because he used to be married to my older sister. My sister is “possessive for life” and would divorce me as a family member if I took up with him.

Still, he’s been calling me at night to talk about her and I have been giving him advice during the long calls. You know what that means — a lot of things are being said in conversation after midnight, especially when both of us have been drinking wine!

The trouble is I know deep down I’m only a substitute for my older sister. I even look like her! He was crazy about her, but he wasn’t true to her, and she can’t forgive him for that!

I understand him. It isn’t in him to be “true blue” to anyone, just like it isn’t for me, either. He can be talking about missing her and then start talking about how much I am like her — “in all the good ways, minus her bad habits.” Nothing would hurt my sister more than me messing with her ex-husband seriously. How do I get myself out of this mess? He calls me almost every night.
