TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a feel-good day. You’ll enjoy time spent alone in private moments or solitude because you’re sensitive to the problems of others. This will heighten your feelings of compassion and encourage you to be helpful to someone in need. Enjoy relaxing at home.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re interested in the world. You want to know what’s going on and you want to talk to others. In particular, you might feel sympathetic toward a friend or group, which in turn might prompt you to become involved in a charitable organization. Your Spidey sense is also heightened.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

People notice you. You can use this to your advantage if you want to set an example, especially one that is caring, compassionate and generous. You also feel confident about your finances. You might shop for something big.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your desire to expand your world is strong. Not only are you interested in travel, you’re also interested in big ideas and making progress via medicine or the law in a way that benefits others. Because your idealism is aroused, you want to help people in need.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re happy to work alone or behind the scenes. Nevertheless, you might do some fundraising or use the wealth and resources of someone else to benefit others. With Mars high in your chart, your ambition is aroused. Plus, you’re interested in talking to younger people — perhaps to rally your troops.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular day and you’re eager to shmooz, especially with members of the general public. You might have a strong connection with a partner, spouse or close friend. Your sympathies are aroused, perhaps for someone close to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You make a fabulous impression on others, which is something you can use if you want to persuade someone about something dear to your heart. This could be a charitable cause or something work-related or relevant to your health.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Do something different, because you’re keen for adventure. This is a marvellous day to shmooz. Accept invitations to socialize. Romantic interests and playful times with kids will delight. You feel particularly concerned about the welfare of children.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might want to help a family member. You’re certainly sensitive to the needs of family members right now. You might research ways to get funding or help for someone who needs assistance. Personally, travel and a chance to do something different appeals to you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’re an idealist who is concerned about the welfare of society. You might be up on your proverbial soapbox or out there with petitions because you care about a cause. Your imagination is heightened, which promotes artistic fantasies.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

If you can do anything to help others, especially via your job, you will, because you feel sensitive to the concerns and problems of people around you. You might be personally generous with your own funds or look for ways to encourage others to be more altruistic.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

TV personality Martha Stewart (1941) shares your birthday. You’re focused, courageous and energetic. You’re also adventurous, impulsive and self-disciplined. This is a fun-loving year, because your zest for life is at a pinnacle. Enjoy socializing with others. Nurture the happiness and beauty you have within. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit. It’s the return of the nice guy, the can-do guy, the BELIEVE guy! But enough of that feel-good stuff. There are questions to be answered when the soccer-is-life series returns! How and why does Ted (Jason Sudeikis) leave the U.S. to go back to the U.K. to coach the AFC Richmond women’s team after having quit the Richmond men’s team at the end of Season 3? What fresh stories will the show come up with to avoid a female rewind of the first three seasons, good as those stories were? And finally how will Hannah Waddington gear down from the fun assassin role in Prime Video’s excellent new series Ride or Die back to the buttoned-down AFC team owner Rebecca Welton? Shall we all find out together?

Charge highlights need for action

The recent reporting regarding a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service employee accused of violating a protection order, following previous convictions related to criminal harassment and breaches of court orders against former partners, raises concerns that extend beyond a single individual.

I believe this case highlights important questions about how public institutions assess and respond to risks associated with intimate partner violence, stalking, coercive control and repeated violations of court-imposed conditions.

Gender-based violence is a public safety issue. Survivors are encouraged to seek protection orders and to call emergency services for safety and support. When those orders are breached, organizations have a responsibility to carefully consider workplace safety, public safety and survivor safety in their decision-making. Manitobans deserve confidence that public institutions have clear, consistent processes to assess risk and respond appropriately.

Sea Bears’ Allen victim of downtown assault

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 12:41 PM CDT

Winnipeg Sea Bears' guard Teddy Allen is in hospital after being assaulted in downtown Winnipeg Sunday night.

The club issued a news release Monday stating head coach and general manager Mike Raimbault and chairman David Asper visited Allen at the hospital but didn't release more information about what happened.

"Our focus is on Teddy's health and supporting him and his family," the Sea Bears' news release stated, directing all questions to the Winnipeg Police Service.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Pat Saydak confirmed the police service is investigating but said no further information was available Monday afternoon.

Rossbrook House volunteer cherishes years teaching youth

Leslie Galloway has believed the old adage “children are the future” for 50 years.

“Children are just so important,” she said. “We need to take really good care of them.”

Galloway retired in June after volunteering on the board of Rossbrook House, at 658 Ross Ave., since it was founded in 1976.

She started at the drop-in community centre for youth when co-founder Sister Geraldine MacNamara asked her to join the board. Once she became a part of the organization, she was hooked.

18-year-old woman shot by Winnipeg police officer

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 12:28 PM CDT

A police officer shot and injured an 18-year-old woman early Monday morning while investigating a College Avenue shooting.

A north district unit officer was in the area of Aikins Street and College Avenue at 2:27 a.m. Aug. 3 when he heard multiple gunshots nearby, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Monday.

The officer went to investigate and "was confronted by a woman and a 16-year-old youth." The officer discharged his gun and the young woman was injured, the police service stated. The woman was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable.

Police recovered a gun from the suspects and investigators later linked the 18-year-old woman and 16-year-old male to a shooting that occurred outside of a home in the 300 block of College Avenue. The 16-year-old was arrested.
