MOON ALERT: Caution. Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions from 1:15 p.m. until 10 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Aries into Taurus.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

You have lots of mental energy because the moon is in your sign dancing with your ruler fiery Mars, which pushes you into a leadership role. It makes you feel independent and ready to challenge anyone who challenges you.

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is 45 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Focus your energy on home and family. You might be best served by working alone or behind the scenes because you’re keen to work hard to boost your earnings. This is also a gentle, social day that is sweet for romance.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Sports and competitive physical activities might appeal to you, especially with friends, teams and groups. At a less-energetic level, you’re also keen to talk to others and share your ideas. Short trips and a chance to learn something new will intrigue.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You’re noticed. Be aware of this in case you have to do some damage control. Ironically, you might be a bit bossy because you want your way with some things. Because of this, you will stand up to bosses and others who challenge you. (Remember courtesy.)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You can explore new ideas, meet new people and learn new things. Politics and controversial subjects might also appeal. Because most of this day is a moon alert, don’t volunteer for anything.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might be caught up in discussions about shared property, wealth, inheritances, taxes and debt. If so, this is a poor day to agree to anything important. (Check moon alert above.) Get your information. Do your homework. Wait until tomorrow to act.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might attract someone to you who is feisty and a bit aggressive, but interesting. See what they have to say because it might be enlightening in some way. Nevertheless, because most of this day is a moon alert (see above), do not agree to anything important.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You’re ready to roll up your sleeves and work. This is why you might delegate to others and be a bit bossy. Keep in mind most of this day is a moon alert, so stick with the schedule. Wait until tomorrow to launch into something new. (You’ll be glad you did.)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a playful, competitive day. If you’re interested in team sports or physical athletics, get out and do your thing because you’re revved up and ready for action. Be smart and be patient with spouses, partners and close friends to keep the peace.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Be understanding and gracious with family members to avoid conflict. Nevertheless, you want to make some improvements around your place. You might see the need for repairs along with ways to fortify where you live for future security.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’ll defend your ideas and explain what you want because your communication style is energized by Mars. This makes you want to initiate things and take charge. Be aware that most of this day is a moon alert. Cool your jets.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might be tempted to spend money — quickly and rashly. This is not a good idea. Restrict your spending to food and gas during the moon alert. Be smart.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Former actress Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex (1981), shares your birthday. You’re strong-willed, intelligent and dynamic. You’re also independent, influential and a seeker of knowledge. This year is about creating solid foundations in your life — both external and internal. Simplicity is key. Take charge of your health. Physical exercise is important. Explore martial arts or yoga. Stay grounded and levelheaded.

Letters, Aug. 7

Clarification: A letter to the editor in the Aug. 6 edition of the Free Press, headlined Defining context, indicated that the federal auditor-general criticized the Canadian Museum for Human Rights for having had deficiencies in managing its exhibitions, saying, “without rigorous systems and practices to ensure accuracy and balance … errors and bias could be introduced to exhibits which could adversely affect the corporation’s reputation and be costly to correct after the fact.”

The report in question was done in 2017 and released publicly in 2018. At the time, the museum agreed with the findings and listed a series of steps it would take to address the issue.

ERs should be used as intendedRe: Steinbach ER under siege by frustrated Winnipeggers (Aug. 5)

The overflow of Winnipeg emergency ward patients to the Regional Health Centre in Steinbach is not surprising.

Winnipeggers hoping for shorter waits in rural ERs delay care for all, Selkirk nurse says

Nicole Buffie 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:38 PM CDT

Nurses and union leaders say Winnipeggers — who are frustrated with wait times at city hospitals — head to rural emergency rooms instead, but the facilities don’t have enough staff to meet the extra demand.

As a result, patients in the Selkirk Regional Health Centre emergency department have waited up to 18 hours during peak times, said one nurse who works there.

The nurse, who spoke to the Free Press on the condition of anonymity, said in recent years they have noted more Winnipeg patients who’ve driven the 25 kilometres north to Selkirk’s ER, believing the wait for treatment would be shorter than in the three emergency departments inside the Perimeter.

“They’re all trying to access health care, right? And everybody deserves health care. And I feel bad, because people have to come out here thinking that the wait times are less,” the nurse said. “I can’t blame people for wanting to seek care, and they’re desperate to see someone.”

New sci-fi/fantasy bookstore a welcome addition

Ben Sigurdson 5 minute read Yesterday at 4:46 PM CDT

A new chapter has begun in Winnipeg’s literary landscape with the opening of science fiction and fantasy bookstore Other Places Books.

Located at 436 Graham Ave., the queer-owned and operated shop is the latest in a host of genre bookstores to have opened in the city over the last few years. In addition to longtime mainstay Whodunit? Mystery Bookstore (163 Lilac St.), the local scene now also features a horror bookstore (Raven’s End Books, which opened at 1859 Portage Ave. in 2024) and a shop focused on romance (Bound to Please, which opened at 995 McPhillips St. earlier this year).

The 900 titles currently in stock at Other Places, which opened Tuesday, span a range of sci-fi and fantasy sub-genres, with a particular focus on queer writers and storylines. The bookstore is the brainchild of Didi Chanoch, who moved to Winnipeg from Israel in 2025 after the Canadian federal government began offering work permits to those in Israel and Palestine looking to leave the area due to the conflict.

Winnipeg ended up on Chanoch’s radar in large part due to a more reasonable cost of living than other Canadian cities.
