James Sands, Matt Freese spark NYCFC to 1-1 draw with Revolution

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Defender James Sands made a spectacular goal clearance before scoring in first-half stoppage time to help New York City FC earn a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution on Sunday.

NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese had two saves on a penalty kick by Carles Gil in the 27th minute to keep it scoreless.

It was Freese’s first penalty save of the season in his fifth try and the first one Gil missed in five attempts this season. Gil is 21 for 24 on PKs over his career. The kick was awarded when defender Peyton Miller was fouled by Sands.

Sands made a spectacular goal clearance in the 33rd minute and then scored off a corner kick from Nicolás Fernández with an assist from Talles Magno in the first minute of stoppage time to tie it 1-1 at halftime.

Sands’ only other goal came in 29 appearances with the club in 2024. Magno’s assist was his third this season and Fernández notched his sixth.

Dor Turgeman took passes from Miller and Jack Harrison in the 36th minute to score his fifth goal this season and his eighth in 24 career matches.

It was a career-best third assist for Miller in his third season. Harrison has five assists in his first four appearances after collecting three of them on Wednesday when Alhassan Yusuf had a hat trick in a 3-0 road win over D.C. United.

Matt Turner stopped four shots on goal for New England (10-7-4), which takes to the road until Sept. 19.

Freese finished with five saves for NYCFC (7-8-6), which has gone 0-2-2 in its last four matches.

The Revolution are 2-2-2 at home since starting the season with a club-record six straight victories.
