KINGSTON – Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after it says Kingston police officers shot a man during an interaction on a bridge, leaving him seriously injured.
The Special Investigations Unit says police received a 911 call from a man in distress around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and were dispatched to the Waaban Crossing bridge.
The SIU says officers encountered the man on the bridge and there was an interaction, during which two officers opened fire.
It says the man was struck multiple times and was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
The SIU says it has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case, and three firearms have been collected from the scene — two belonging to the officers and one belonging to the man.
Earlier Wednesday, police said the bridge spanning the Great Cataraqui River would be closed in both directions for an extended period of time.
