Two men charged in robbery after shot fired in Gunton

One man turned himself in on robbery charges after a police chase while another suspect fell through his attic in an attempt to evade officers, RCMP say.

Police had been on the lookout for two men accused of stealing a truck at gunpoint and firing a shot at a home in Gunton on Aug. 19.

Officers learned two men pulled up to a residence and attempted to steal a truck parked on the driveway. A 39-year-old man came outside of the home and was confronted by one of the suspects, police said. The suspect struck the man in the arm with the weapon and then shot a bullet in the ground close to him.

The suspect returned to the stolen truck and drove away while his partner fled in the truck the two arrived in.

Police had asked the public for help finding the two men.

Officers found and charged both men, RCMP said in a Wednesday news release.

RCMP spotted a truck Sunday evening that matched the description of one that was involved in the Gunton incident. When officers approached the vehicle, inside a barn at a property in the Rural Municipality of Rosser, the truck fled north onto Highway 7.

RCMP chased the suspect but eventually gave up, concerned for public safety.

About an hour later, RCMP were told the truck had lost control at an intersection in the RM of Armstrong and two people fled the vehicle on foot. At least one was wearing a ghillie suit, a large camouflage outfit used in hunting. RCMP, including the police dog unit, searched the area without success.

The following day, Wade Wright, 31, turned himself in at the Gimli detachment. He faces several charges, including robbery with a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Hours later, RCMP executed a warrant at a home in Gimli. A man was hiding in the attic but fell through the ceiling while officers were searching for him. He ran outside and was taken into custody following a struggle with police. He was treated in hospital for a bite from a police dog.

Mackenzie Sabel, 30, faces multiple charges including discharging a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, robbery with a firearm and resisting arrest.

The handgun believed to be used in the Gunton incident was recovered by officers. It was reported stolen from a store in South Carolina in 2018.

Both men remain in custody.
