Police say a former Brampton, Ont., lawyer has been charged after allegedly defrauding people of more than $4 million through various mortgage and cheque scams.

Peel regional police say the suspect lost his licence to practise law last year after a disciplinary tribunal found he knowingly participated in a mortgage fraud scheme in late 2019.

They say police also received several complaints in June and July alleging the man engaged in fraudulent activity.

Investigators allege Pawanjeet Singh Mann orchestrated four separate mortgage and cheque fraud schemes.

They say he was arrested earlier this month and charged with four counts each of fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime, three counts of criminal breach of trust and two of uttering forged documents.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to come forward.
