Man stabbed at The Forks

Police are investigating after a man was stabbed while walking through a park at the Forks Monday night.

The victim, a man in his 40s, told police he was confronted by a group of young people he didn’t know and was stabbed. Officers were called at around 10:55 p.m. The victim was sent to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Investigators with the major crimes unit are asking for anyone with information, including any surveillance data, to call 204-986-6219, anonymously at 204-786-TIPS, or submit a tip at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

Man lured, sexually assaulted girl at mall: police

A 19-year-old man is accused of luring and sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a Winnipeg shopping mall after meeting online.

Police said the victim went to an individual washroom upon seeing a man she agreed to meet in person Aug. 21.

The man followed her into the washroom, locked the door, sexually assaulted her and then threatened her as he left, police said. He then fled the mall.

The girl sought help from mall security, who contacted police. The victim received medical attention.

After the sex crimes unit identified a suspect, officers searched and seized electronic devices at a home in Winnipeg’s South Pointe West neighbourhood Aug. 31. A suspect was arrested later that day.

Police said Muhammad Zain is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, uttering threats, luring a person under 16 by means of telecommunication, and forcible confinement. He was held in custody.

Water levels forecasted to be below normal along Red River

A federal body is warning a “recent drought” may cause water levels to drop along the Red River between St. Andrews Lock and Dam and the City of Winnipeg.

In a news release Tuesday afternoon, Public Services and Procurement Canada said waters are “forecasted to fall below the summer operational level” and warned boat operators to avoid possible hazards like rocks that would otherwise be submerged.

“PSPC will continue to lock vessels through but will not accept responsibility for water levels upstream or downstream of the lock, and in addition will not be responsible for the depth of water over the Lister Rapids,” the news release said.

$1.8M in contraband seized at Stony Mountain prison

Stony Mountain Institution staff intercepted about $1.8 million-worth of contraband and unauthorized items, including THC concentrate, on Sunday.

The items were found in packages at the prison just north of Winnipeg. The Correctional Service of Canada provided few details in a news release.

Police were notified, the news release said.

Vacant Portage la Prairie mall ransacked by vandals

RCMP are investigating after a suspect or suspects broke into the vacant Portage la Prairie Mall and vandalized the building on Monday, causing more than $100,000 in damage.

Mounties were called to the vacant mall on Saskatchewan Avenue West at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Police say the suspect or suspects caused “extensive” damage throughout the building. Most windows inside the building were smashed, a tree was cut down, the general office and several unoccupied storefronts were ransacked and graffiti was spray-painted on walls.

Mounties say they believe the damage will cost more than $100,000 to fix. Nothing appears to have been stolen.

Souris man accused of pointing gun at woman

A 66-year-old man from Souris, accused of bursting into a home and pointing a gun at a woman last week, has been charged with a slew of offences.

Blue Hills RCMP were called about the incident just before 1 p.m. last Thursday. RCMP say a man knocked on the door of a couple’s home in Souris, then asked the woman who answered the door to speak to her partner.

He then assaulted the woman and pointed a rifle at her, but she ran off as her husband arrived. The husband tackled the man and wrestled the gun from him, then held him down while waiting for police, RCMP say.

Officers arrived and took the man into custody. He was taken to a local hospital and was arrested the next morning. Mounties seized a firearm.

Kenneth Kettles, 66, of Souris, is charged with pointing a firearm, break and enter, assault with a weapon and several firearms offences, among others. He was let out on a release order.
