S&P/TSX composite falls, U.S. markets also down as oil tops US$100 per barrel

TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index fell 400 points on Thursday, while U.S. markets also lost ground and the price of oil topped US$100 per barrel.
The October crude oil contract was up US$6.43 at US$102.48 per barrel.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 400.28 points at 35,506.28.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 316.56 points at 52,064.10. The S&P 500 index was down 44.66 points at 7,591.70, while the Nasdaq composite was down 171.62 points at 26,081.72.
The Canadian dollar traded for 72.35 cents US compared with 72.47 cents US on Wednesday.
The December gold contract was down US$53.40 at US$4,407.30 an ounce.
