MOON ALERT: Caution! Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and major decisions all day until 7:30 p.m. After that, the moon moves from Virgo into Libra.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Be careful, because most of this day is a moon alert, which can promote creative, outside-of-the-box thinking. However, it can also promote unrealistic, crazy decisions. Write down your imaginative ideas. Don’t act until the moon alert is over. (See above.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Due to the moon alert, this day holds lots of creative opportunities for you! If you work in the arts, you will be wildly imaginative. It’s also a great day to shmooz and have fun. However, avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re focused on home and family — and perhaps a parent — more than usual. Tread carefully when making important decisions, because there’s a moon alert (see above). Enjoy playful times. Restrict spending to food and gas.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Be careful in discussions with others. Don’t trust a sudden decision or idea because there is a moon alert. (See above.) Stick to business as usual. Family discussions and home repairs might occur. This is a great day to socialize and shmooz!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You have to be careful today because the moon alert is taking place in your money house. This means you’ll be tempted to make financial decisions. You’ll be tempted to shop and spend money. However, be smart and restrict your spending to food and gas. (See above.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The moon alert is taking place in your sign, which is why you might feel a bit adrift or indecisive. Don’t act on a sudden idea that occurs to you. Don’t shop (except for food and gas). Relax and enjoy the company of others. It’s a great day to shmooz and take it easy.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your ruler Venus is going to be in your house of money for the next six weeks, encouraging you to spend on beautiful things. (It can also attract money to you.) Both these things will increase your focus on money. Restrict spending during the moon alert! Be wise.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a great day to shmooz with friends and get in contact with people involved with groups and organizations. Don’t volunteer for anything during the moon alert. Don’t agree to anything important. Use the day to spitball ideas and enjoy the company of others.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You are a future-oriented sign. Because the moon alert is taking place at the top of your chart, you might have some far-out ideas about plans and goals. Jot them down. Save them for future consideration. Don’t act on them now.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Your interest in publishing, the media, medicine, the law and higher education is stronger than usual right now. You might have some ideas and plans cooking on the back burner. Be aware that the moon alert affects those very areas! (Whaaat?) Do nothing.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Be careful, because the moon alert is taking place in one of your money houses. Therefore, avoid decisions about banking, shared property, taxes, debt and mortgages. Do your homework and get your facts, but do not act until the moon alert is over.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

The only moon alert opposite your sign all year is taking place. Don’t agree to anything important when talking to spouses, partners or close friends. Don’t volunteer for anything. Just coast. Be especially suspicious of ideas that just pop into your head. Forewarned is forearmed.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Taraji P. Henson (1970) shares your birthday. You are observant, strategic and empathetic. You’re organized and have the courage of your convictions. Take time to socialize and enjoy your life this year. Nurture the happiness and beauty you have within. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit! Have fun, but remember your goals.

Winnipeg police are investigating a “serious incident” in which people were injured following a police pursuit near Broadway and Young Street Friday afternoon.

Police said the scene would remain secured as officers investigate. No details about the number or severity of injuries were released.

Broadway was closed between Furby and Young streets until further notice and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

Retired sportscaster Scott Oake determined as fundraising for women's addictions treatment facility enters home stretch

Melissa Martin 4 minute read Thursday, Sep. 10, 2026

For now, the patch of land just east of the Victoria Hospital doesn’t look like much: just a field of rocks, mounded dirt, and concrete piles driven into the earth. Yet when Scott Oake looks over the site, he can already imagine how it will look in just over a year’s time, when the new Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre is expected to open.

It’s easier to picture this time around. In 2020, when the recently-retired CBC sportscaster and his late wife, Anne, were building their first labour of intermingled grief and love, the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre for men, it was hard for him to wrap his mind around how a raw construction site could transform into a welcoming addictions treatment facility.

When that centre opened in 2021, Oake found it looked “almost identical” to the architect’s renderings. So it’s easy to hope the Anne Oake Centre will be the same. It will be the first facility of its kind, its founders believe, not only in Canada but in North America: a place where 50 to 70 women can pursue sobriety while staying with their children.

“At Bruce Oake there’s a culture of love, and most of all a culture of hope,” Oake said, speaking at the site Thursday after a media conference to announce the final push of the centre’s fundraising campaign. “I can feel it every time I walk into that building. And I know it will be the same here.”

What do we elect a school trustee to do?

Laura Reimer 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

On Oct. 28, Manitobans will once again elect the people who serve on our local school boards. School trustee races rarely attract the attention given to other elections. Yet school boards are among our most immediate forms of representative democracy.

Before asking who should be a school trustee, perhaps we should ask a more basic question:

What, exactly, are we electing a school trustee to do?

Trustees are elected to govern a school division. They are not elected to run it.

Drug recovery centre opens office in ‘heart of the city’

Morgan Modjeski 4 minute read 3:38 PM CDT

Richard Halverson found his freedom from addiction through Adult & Teen Challenge and, six years later, he hopes a new Winnipeg location will bring hope to the city.

Dozens gathered Saturday morning to mark the grand opening of the recovery centre’s community services office on Main Street.

Located inside the former Wojcik funeral home, the bright-white building — which was also formerly a liquor store — will serve as an access point for people fighting drug addiction. That includes connecting them to addictions support, housing and training.

“For me, I always start with: ‘What’s your story?’” said Halverson, who now works for the faith-based organization.
