Inflation

Statistics Canada is set to release its latest reading for inflation on Monday morning when it publishes its consumer price index for August. The annual inflation rate rose to three per cent in July as higher gas prices helped push the key data point higher. Excluding gasoline, the annual inflation rate was 2.2 per cent in July.

Housing data

A pair of key reports on the Canadian housing market are expected this week. The Canadian Real Estate Association is expected to release its home sales figures for August on Tuesday, followed by housing starts figures from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. on Wednesday.

Dollarama results

Dollarama Inc. will report its second-quarter results and hold a conference call with investors and financial analysts on Wednesday morning. The retailer saw its first-quarter profit and sales rise compared with a year ago as it looked to grow in Canada and internationally.

AI conference

The All In AI tech conference in Montreal starts on Wednesday. The event is expected to bring together experts, researchers and business and political leaders to talk about the Canadian AI ecosystem and building an AI-powered economy. The conference comes amid rising concerns about AI safety.

Winnipeg Jets trade Connor Hellebuyck to New Jersey Devils

Mike McIntyre 8 minute read Friday, Oct. 23, 2026

Connor Hellebuyck finally got his wish. Kevin Cheveldayoff finally got an offer he couldn’t refuse. And a long-running sports soap opera has finally ended.

The Winnipeg Jets pulled off a blockbuster deal Friday morning, shipping their disgruntled franchise goaltender to the New Jersey Devils for a package including four players and two draft picks.

Although they liked the return, nobody within the organization was popping champagne. This was, in many ways, a dark but necessary day.

“It certainly hasn’t been fun. There’s no question about it. But at the end of the day, Connor made his choice. And, as an organization, we had to act accordingly and we did,” the general manager said during an afternoon news conference inside Canada Life Centre.

Woman receives 8½-month sentence for disposal of body

Dean Pritchard 4 minute read Yesterday at 5:04 PM CDT

A Winnipeg woman who helped dispose the body of a slain Mexican man under threat of death from his killers has been ordered to serve another 8½ months in jail.

Devlin Langlois, 25, had pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder in the March 2025 killing of 28-year-old Diego Moscoza in a Selkirk Avenue house.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Candace Grammond, in a written ruling delivered Friday, rejected a recommendation by Langlois’s lawyer Joshua Rogala that she be sentenced to the equivalent of nearly 16 months of time served.

Grammond said she accepted that Langlois feared for her life. However, she made no effort to help Moscoza when he was gravely injured and his killers were not present in the home and had not yet threatened her.

Bombers top B.C. Lions 34-10 to earn playoff spot

Taylor Allen 5 minute read Yesterday at 8:41 AM CDT

Dru Brown saved the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ season.

They were a trainwreck for the opening 40-plus minutes in Vancouver on Friday night before Brown provided the ultimate spark, accounting for 31 consecutive points in a 34-10 victory over the B.C. Lions to clinch a playoff berth.

The Lions — who had nothing to play for and rested a long list of key starters — somehow led 10-3 late in the third quarter when Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros was forced to leave the game. Lions defensive tackle Nathan Cherry was flagged for roughing the passer after driving Collaros into the turf, and the 38-year-old pivot was ruled out shortly thereafter.

And then Brown’s brilliance began.
