Two accused of arson in overnight fires

Two men are accused of arson in separate Winnipeg fires.

In the first incident, police were called to a duplex in the Centennial neighbourhood at 1:18 a.m. for a report of a fire.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic crews launched an interior attack and had the blaze under control shortly before 2 a.m.

Residents were able to evacuate before crews arrived and no one was hurt.

A 20-year-old man was taken into custody at the scene and charged with arson. He faces multiple charges and remains in custody.

In the second incident, police were sent to a fire at a three-storey apartment on the 200 block of Young Street.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic crews located a man inside a suite that was on fire. The 50-year-old was removed from the building and charged with arson. He remains in custody.

Man dead in farm equipment incident

A 66-year-old Ninette man died Friday after being struck by farming equipment.

Blue Hills RCMP were sent to the Municipality of Glenboro South Cypress, shortly before 9 a.m.. When officers arrived, they located a dead man lying in a field.

RCMP and Manitoba Workplace Health and Safety are investigating.

Two injured in stabbings

Winnipeg police are investigating two separate stabbings, including an early-morning attack on a delivery driver.

Officers responded to the first stabbing at 12:15 a.m. Thursday in a parking lot in the 600 block of William Avenue, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

Officers arrived on the scene and found a delivery driver in his 60s had been stabbed.

Officers provided emergency care to the man, including applying a tourniquet. He was rushed to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable, police said.

On Friday morning at 1 a.m., police responded to a stabbing at a hotel in the 300 block of Nairn Avenue. A man in his 20s was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

The major crimes unit is investigating both incidents.

Construction set for Arlington Street, Abinojii Mikanah

Paving work will see Arlington Street closed between Adele Avenue and Winnipeg Avenue on Saturday starting at 6 a.m.

Motorists are advised there will be no access from Arlington onto Notre Dame Avenue or vice versa, the city said Friday.

Traffic on Notre Dame will be reduced to one lane between Alverstone Street and Home Street, but sidewalk access won’t be affected.

Buses in the area will be rerouted and three transit stops will be relocated during paving. Roads are expected to reopen by 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The city also announced resurfacing work for the intersection of Abinojii Mikanah and River Road beginning Monday and lasting until Oct. 9.

Abinojii Mikanah will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Pembina Highway and St. Mary’s Road during that time, in addition to several lane closures. Sidewalks on the south side of Abinojii Mikanah and the east side of River Road will also be closed.

In addition, the intersection at Dakota Street and Dunkirk Drive in St. Vital will be closed Saturday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. for paving work. Transit will be rerouted during the closure.

Drivers should expect delays and plan ahead, the city said.

Man dead in Reinfeld crash

A 40-year-old Winkler man is dead after a three-vehicle collision Thursday night in the community of Reinfeld.

Police were sent to scene at 8:15 p.m. and came across three damaged vehicles blocking traffic on the road, RCMP said in a news release Friday.

Officers learned the three vehicles were travelling westbound on Highway 14 when the lead vehicle slowed to make a turn. The second vehicle also slowed. The third vehicle collided with the rear of the second vehicle, causing extensive damage.

The driver of the second vehicle was sent to a Winnipeg hospital by air ambulance but later died of his injuries.

The driver of the third vehicle, a 41-year-old man from the Rural Municipality of Stanley, was taken to hospital as a precaution. The driver of the lead vehicle, an 18-year-old Plum Coulee woman, was not injured.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Reinfeld is just east of Winkler, about 120 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

First Nation requests voluntary halt to moose hunting in its territory

A northern Manitoba First Nation is calling for a voluntary closure of moose hunting in its traditional territory to protect a declining population of local animals.

On Friday morning, Misipawistik Cree Nation issued a plea urging hunters to abstain from harvesting moose in provincial Game Hunting Area 10 — a 10,000-square-kilometre region of boreal forest north of Grand Rapids, Man. The request applies during this year’s moose-hunting seasons, which open Monday.

According to the province’s 2025 aerial big game survey, an estimated 281 moose reside in the game area, roughly 60 of which are bull moose. The area contained an estimated 346 moose in 2013. 

This year, 124 licences and 62 bull moose tags were made available in the region during the province’s annual hunting draw.

“That is putting the entire population at risk of a collapse,” Misipawistik Chief Heidi Cook said in an interview with The Narwhal and Winnipeg Free Press ahead of the announcement. “There may be no moose next year. This is an emergency. We have to do something now to make sure that the population can recover.”
