MOON ALERT: After 12:15 a.m., there are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Capricorn.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a tricky day. Don’t be too ambitious. It’s totally OK to kick back and relax. But be aware that communications with parents and authority figures might be confused, vague or subject to misunderstandings. Nevertheless, romance is sweet and cosy!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Avoid controversial subjects and important discussions about politics, religious issues and travel because this will get you nowhere. Too much confusion! However, you might be interested in a new relationship with someone “different.” In fact, new love can blossom.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a poor day for financial discussions or working out how to share something with a friend or group because wishful thinking will outweigh logic and rational analysis. Too tricky! However, a work-related romance might be dreamy and promising.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Be careful in discussions with parents, bosses, spouses, partners and close friends because distorted views and misunderstandings are classic. Beware of overdoing it with alcohol or drugs. It’s a tricky day, however, romance as well as relations with kids are reassuring.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Work-related relationships will be supportive, perhaps even romantic. However, discussions about foreign nations or issues related to travel, politics and religion will very likely be confusing and possibly distorted. You won’t know what to believe. Tread carefully. Some people are just off-base.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a lovely day for romance, playful outings, socializing, sporting events and fun activities with kids. However, be careful if dealing with joint expenses, shared property, or the wealth and resources of others. Something is off or incorrect. Assume nothing.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’re in a dreamy state of mind which can promote fantasy over reality. This is why it’s a poor day for important decisions about family issues or partnerships. Nevertheless, something to do with your finances or purchases will please you. Keep your receipts — and the box.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is basically a relaxed, dreamy day. Don’t give yourself an ambitious agenda. However, be careful of overdoing it with booze or drugs or something that can confuse you because this is possible. (Even food poisoning.) Fortunately, relations with siblings, relatives and neighbours are cosy.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

In many ways, this is a laid-back, feel-good day! However, there might be confusion or incorrect assumptions in romantic relationships as well as in dealing with social situations or kids’ activities. Double-check all your details. Make sure you’re on the same page.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The moon is in your sign, which gives you a slight advantage over others. In fact, relations with friends and groups will be warm and supportive. However, be careful with family discussions because this is where confusion might trip you up. Do your best to be clear with everyone.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Take it easy. Relations with bosses, parents and authority figures are warm and supportive. People are happy to see you. Nevertheless, if you feel a sense of confusion or that something fishy is going on — it probably is. That’s because this is a dreamy, fuzzy day for many people.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Be careful about financial agreements between friends and groups. Double-check details for errors or incorrect assumptions, because people can be sloppy in their thinking about money. However, enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds. Grab every opportunity to travel or learn something new, because this will delight you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Jeremy Irons (1948) shares your birthday. You are sensual, and you admire beauty. You’re also lively, enthusiastic and interested in new experiences. This is a slower-paced year. Take time to rejuvenate your energy. Focus on business and personal relationships and try to hang out with people who are kind, helpful and have your back.

Gillingham in lead with decided voters

Nicole Buffie 6 minute read Friday, Sep. 18, 2026

A cloud of uncertainty is hanging over Winnipeg as October’s municipal election nears.

Three months after a poll showed more than 40 per cent of Winnipeggers wanted to see someone other than current mayor Scott Gillingham elected, a new Abacus Data poll indicates more than half of Winnipeg voters are undecided heading into next month’s civic election.

Of decided voters, 55 per cent favour Gillingham compared to 23 per cent for former councillor and provincial cabinet minister Kevin Klein and 11 per cent for funeral director Mike Vogiatzakis.

Of all respondents, just over 50 per cent said they were unsure while 13 per cent said they will not vote.

Grieving child builds backyard rocket ship

Harriet Zaidman 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

I Built a Rocket Ship (Kids Can Press, 32 pages, hardcover, $22) by Winnipegger Anna Lazowski is a tender story for children ages 4-8 about a little girl trying to make sense of her mother’s death. The child engages in conversation with her late mom, agreeing and disagreeing about things said as she carries objects (and of course, the cat) to the backyard. There, she is building a rocket ship she will pilot into the skies to find her mom again.

Jennica Lounsbury’s varied perspectives show the range of emotions the little girl experiences.

Northwoods Lullaby by Mary Casanova (University of Minnesota Press, 32 pages, hardover, $25) is a bedtime book for readers up to age eight, perfect to bring a busy, happy day to a close. Just like children who are listening to adults reading the book, all the animal babies are being tucked into their nests and burrows by loving parents: “Thump and scamper,/nimble clover./ Soon it’s time to rest. Baby loon/ nestles in/as Papa floats along.”

‘She was looking to destroy me’: convicted harasser faces new charges

Dean Pritchard 6 minute read Thursday, Sep. 17, 2026

When Agnieszka Ciochon-Newton moved into the 55-plus apartment building on Stradbrook Avenue last year, she came across as “timid, soft-spoken and sensitive,” said building manager Tanya Owen.

Little did Owen know the meek-looking 58-year-old woman would soon turn her life and the lives of many of her tenants upside down and threaten her career and family.

“She was looking to destroy me for a simple tenant disagreement,” Owen said Thursday.

Court records show Ciochon-Newton was arrested earlier this month and charged with seven counts of criminal harassment, two counts of uttering threats and one count each of fraud, breaking and entering, attempting to obstruct justice, intimidation of a justice official, mischief and defamatory libel.

Near-future U.S. the setting for surreal dual-world storyline

Reviewed by Morley Walker 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

It’s not every day you encounter a seriously intended literary novel that attempts to dramatize a mind-bending physics theory like quantum entanglement.

But then the B.C.-born-and-raised Emily St. John Mandel is not your everyday Canadian literary writer.

In her late 40s, she has lived in the U.S. for her entire writing career. She is best known for her 2014 dystopian novel Station Eleven, about a Shakespearean acting troupe navigating a pandemic-ravaged America.

Her new outing, her seventh, Exit Party, shares DNA with detective and sci-fi genres more than with conventional literary fiction.
