ARIES (March 21-April 19)

The new moon is your chance to think how you can improve your closest long-term relationships. Do you listen carefully? Examine your behaviour in your relationships. What do you expect? What do you offer?

Game of Thrones star Charles Dance is 80 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is the best day of the year to think about how you can work smarter and be as productive as possible because the new moon is in your house of employment. (This applies even if you’re not in a salaried job.) Will setting goals help? Making lists?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The new moon urges you to examine your attitude to romance, your style of relating to children and your appreciation (or lack of it) for your creative talents. Do you enjoy your leisure activities and creative opportunities? Think: creation, procreation and recreation.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You’re a nester. The only new moon all year is in this part of your chart, which is your chance to think about how you can improve your relations with family members. And also, what you can do to improve where you live? Ideas?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The only new moon all year in your house of communications is happening. Observe your style of relating to everyone on a daily basis. Are you clear in your communications? Are you friendly? Are you courteous and thoughtful? Or do you ignore these life-enriching qualities?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The new moon is in your money house. Your belief about something affects how it manifests in your life. Do you respect money as energy to make things happen? Are you “Easy come, easy go,” or “A penny saved is a penny earned?”

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The only new moon all year in your sign is happening. Take a realistic look in the mirror. What impression do you create on your world? Your appearance dictates much of how people treat and respond to you. Ideas?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

The new moon is in the part of your chart that symbolizes your unconscious behaviour. Because each new moon is a chance to make resolutions, you might ask yourself, “Where do I undermine myself? In what areas of my life am I most self-defeating?”

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

The new moon is your chance to make resolutions about your friendships. Are you spending time with people you really want to be with? Are your buddies quality people? If you want to have friends — be friendly!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The new moon is at the top of your chart. This happens once a year and it’s your chance to observe your style of relating to authority: bosses, the police, courts, parents and the government. It’s also an excellent day to think about long-term goals. Where do you want to be in three years?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This might be the best day of the year to take stock of your education and your world experience. What further training or education might improve your life and job? What travel might enrich your world? Think about this — even briefly.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

The new moon is in your money house that concerns debt and shared wealth. It’s the best day of the year to think about how you can reduce your debt, and also to look at how much you rely on your own resources versus those of people who help you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Charles Dance (1946) shares your birthday. You are practical, rational and perceptive. You become absorbed with whatever you’re doing. Enjoy yourself this year. Your creativity and zest for life are at a pinnacle. Nurture the happiness and beauty you have within. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit. Have fun, but remember your goals.

Careful work goes into preserving vintage threads at costume museum

Every Friday morning seven retired women — Diane Zakala, Helen Leeds, Margaret Mills, Melinda Barr, Therese Leneveu, Karen Eastwood and Letizia Sandron — make their way from homes across the city to a nondescript warehouse in downtown Winnipeg.

The group members troop in right at 9 a.m., as they have been doing every week for the last eight years, towards the back of the brightly lit warehouse where the bulk of the collection of the Costume Museum of Canada (410-70 Arthur St.) is stored.

The vintage fashion pieces — some dating back to more than a century — have been carefully packed away in long, flat garment boxes, stacked on rows of shelves.

Some clothes are in mint condition, impeccably taken care of by their owners, while a few show signs of wear and tear and need little bit of care courtesy of expert seamstress Barr, who lovingly restores items which have incurred minimal damage.

Jets’ game flies south against Ducks

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Friday, Oct. 9, 2026

The Winnipeg Jets sure looked like a team that was running on fumes Friday night.

Playing for the fifth time in eight days, the club suffered its first regulation loss of the young season — a lacklustre 5-1 showing against the Anaheim Ducks at Canada Life Centre.

While we won’t question the effort, the execution was a different story. Sloppy plays, missed passes, porous defensive-zone coverage and iffy goaltending made this a tough watch for the 13,693 fans in attendance.

“Just some mental things that happened. Obviously some physical things as well,” said head coach Scott Arniel.

A weekly lap around the NHL by Free Press hockey writers Ken Wiebe and Mike McIntyre

The New York Islanders are first-overall. The Calgary Flames are in the league basement.

We’re talking about goaltending, specifically the metric of “goals against above expected” as tracked by the Money Puck website which factors in shot quality and location and is a much better measure than traditional numbers such as goals-against-average and even save percentage, which can be heavily influenced by team factors.

In a nutshell, you want to be as high as possible on this list, suggesting your masked men are doing their job by stopping everything they should — and hopefully a few more. The lower you are in the 32-team league, the more likely you have a leaky crease.

Towing company hands stolen car back, but not to owner

By Matthew Frank 4 minute read Friday, Oct. 9, 2026

A Manitoba man says he is dumbfounded after his car was stolen, impounded by a Winnipeg towing company and given back — to someone that wasn’t him.

Cody Lamb lives in the western Manitoba community of Douglas, about 18 kilometres east of Brandon, but spends weeks away from home working on oil rigs in Alberta.

The 24-year-old says on Sept. 11, while away for work, he heard from his girlfriend who told him his car wasn’t in their driveway. Lamb reported the car stolen to Brandon RCMP the same day.

After filing the report, he heard from Steinbach RCMP on Oct. 1 that his car was recovered that day in the community of Mitchell, roughly five km west of Steinbach.

A Life's Story: Writer built bridges with genuine curiosity, compassion for diversity of religious practices

Brenda Suderman knew how to make people feel comfortable. For a journalist, that character trait is a real strength, and it made people trust and appreciate her.

Whether covering musicals, worship spaces, the effects of pandemic shutdowns, death rituals and practices of different traditions, the discovery of the burial of 2,284 infants in unmarked graves, or any other of the countless topics she wrote about in her four- decade career, Suderman did it with genuine interest and care.

Born and raised in Winkler, Suderman grew up on a farm. Much of her childhood was spent in gardens and sugar beet fields.

Baptized at 16, she became a member of the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church. The restrictions against women at the time contributed to planting the seeds of Suderman’s feminist perspective.

Longtime voice of the Blue and Gold marks major milestone

David Sanderson 8 minute read Friday, Oct. 9, 2026

Bob McGregor made his debut as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ public-address announcer on June 7, 1997, during a pre-season game at Winnipeg Stadium between the hometown Blue Bombers and their western rivals, the Calgary Stampeders.

McGregor will be behind the microphone again this Saturday, detailing the action on the field in addition to leading a boisterous Princess Auto Stadium crowd through what has become his signature call, “And that is another Winnipeg Blue Bombers first down!”

The Bombers’ final home date of the 2026 regular season will mark a major milestone for McGregor, and the former newscaster feels it’s only fitting the same two teams as 10,717 days ago — the Bombers and Stampeders — will be the ones butting helmets.

“I knew at the start of the season I was closing in on 300 games as the PA guy, only it wasn’t until I went through the schedule that I realized my 300th would be Winnipeg-Calgary, which struck me as kind of cool,” McGregor says, seated in a St. James breakfast nook, dressed in dark trousers and a blue-and-gold Blue Bombers golf shirt.
