NEW YORK (AP) — Gunnar Smith threw for a touchdown and his late game-winning touchdown run rallied Fordham to a surprise 20-14 win over Richmond on Saturday.
Smith helped lead a five-play, 50-yard drive later in the third quarter that ended with Jamell James tying it at 14 on a 2-yard scoring run.
Late in fourth, Smith guided a 12-play, 62-yard scoring drive that concluded with him running it from the 5. The Rams led 20-14 following the missed PAT attempt.
On Richmond’s following drive, Boogie Owens intercepted Ashten Snelsire with 1:11 left. Fordham killed the clock to seal the game.
Smith’s touchdown run marked Fordham’s first lead since going up 7-0 on the game’s opening drive. Smith threw a 10-yard touchdown to Ricky Gonzalez II for the early lead.
Snelsire threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Bryce Allen early in the second to tie it at 7. Then, early in the third, Camden Byrd sacked Smith to force a fumble which was recovered in the end zone by Jordan Allen for a 14-7 Spiders lead.
Fordham (2-5, 2-2) ended its two-game skid with the win.
Richmond (5-2, 3-1), entered ranked 19th in the Stats Perform poll.
