MOON ALERT: Caution! Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions from 10:45 a.m. until 9 p.m. today. After that, the moon moves from Capricorn into Aquarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Cut yourself some slack, because it’s a bit lacklustre due to the moon alert. Cope as best you can. Socialize in a low-key way. Focus on hobbies and creative self-expression. Baby steps.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a good day to kick back and relax because there’s a moon alert for most of the day. Don’t shop except for food and gas. Postpone important decisions. Explore your world and learn new things, as this will interest you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Be careful due to the fact the moon alert is in your eighth house, which concerns shared property, taxes, debt and inheritances. Don’t make important decisions regarding these issues. Stay chill.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You might feel fuzzy and vague about issues. You’re not sure what to do first. This doesn’t mean it has to be a bad day; but it might not be a productive day. Go along to get along.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Be pleased with whatever you manage to do because it might be hard to stay focused during the moon alert. Make a list. Be grateful if you get three things done. Even two. Maybe even one. Don’t make a big deal about anything.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a creative day. It’s a good day to socialize in a low-key way with others. Enjoy sports, fun activities with kids and shmoozing in a lighthearted way. Don’t volunteer for anything. Restrict your spending to food and gas.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’ll be best-off relaxing at home, especially because you might be more involved with a parent or female relative. Don’t make big decisions as it’s a moon alert all day. Pamper yourself. Don’t be too ambitious. Take it easy.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

There’s a moon alert all day. Try to stay relaxed and don’t be hard on yourself if you feel indecisive and not sure what to do next. A short drive for pleasure might be pleasing. You will also enjoy casual conversations with others, especially siblings, relatives and neighbours. Stay chill.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Be careful as there’s a moon alert in effect all day and it’s taking place in your primary money house, which means you will be tempted to shop and explore financial angles and negotiations. Don’t do this. Do your homework and wait until the moon alert is over to act.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

There might be confusing elements at play because most of this day is a moon alert and it’s happening in your sign. This is why you might feel unsure and indecisive about things. Not sure what to do next. A bit at sixes and sevens. Don’t worry, as this will be brief. Enjoy relaxation.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The best way to deal with the day is to be low-key and enjoy privacy or work alone or behind the scenes. A discussion with a parent or a boss could be fruitful. However, because there’s a moon alert all day, agree to nothing important. Certainly, don’t volunteer.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a good day for quiet conversations with friends and members of groups. Don’t agree to anything important and don’t volunteer for anything. Explore ideas. You might work if you have the energy, but it could be short-lived. Take it easy.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme (1960) shares your birthday. You’re socially aware and self-reliant. You’re affectionate, inspiring and responsible. This is a slower-paced year. Take time to rejuvenate your energy. Focus on business and personal relationships and hang out with people who are kind, helpful and have your back. Concentrate on your needs and what brings you happiness.

Instead of canola on Friday, there was sod.

But in two years’ time, by current estimates, the bare plot of land in a St. Boniface industrial park will hold canola samples and seeds for testing.

Bayer Canada officially broke ground on a 60,000-square-foot research and development facility Friday morning.

“It’s about bringing new and better innovation to farmers,” said Kacy Perry, Bayer Crop Science Canada’s country division head.

De Havilland calls for national water bomber fleet as it scrambles to meet demand

Christopher Reynolds, The Canadian Press 6 minute read 5:00 AM CDT

MONTREAL - On July 13, a pair of Canadair water bombers touched down on the Seine River, skimming along its surface to refill their water tanks as they battled a wildfire south of Paris.

The "super scoopers," with their signature ketchup-red wing tips on a mustard-yellow body, sucked up 6,000-plus litres from France’s most famous waterway in one go as part of a fight against the flames then rampaging across Europe.

The event in north-central France underscored how wildfires are ranging even farther from their traditional grounds and fuelling an urgent need for water bombers to fend off climate disasters.

The iconic Canadair turboprops serve as the only amphibious firefighting aircraft currently in production built from the outset for that purpose, rather than being retrofitted to douse flames.

Hockey teams scramble after two city arenas put on ice

Morgan Modjeski 6 minute read Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026

Instead of ice, Barry Bonni walks onto a dull concrete surface at the Terry Sawchuk Memorial Arena on Thursday.

The arena, as well as the West Kildonan Memorial Arena, have had to close after failing inspections. Predictably, the city’s hockey community is in a tailspin because ice time is so precious.

“We’re now in panic mode,” said Bonni, president of the River East Royal Knights on Thursday. The Sawchuk arena is the team’s home rink.

Bonni, who is a living legend in Manitoba’s hockey community, said the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League club is scrambling to find ice time.

Inconsistency plagues Bombers as season hangs in balance

Taylor Allen 6 minute read Updated: 9:13 AM CDT

It’s reached a point where members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers can no longer hide their frustration.

They’ve been inconsistent all season, and it caught up with them again Friday at Commonwealth Stadium in a 35-27 loss to the Edmonton Elks.

The Bombers (8-9) could’ve clinched a playoff berth with a win. With both the Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-8) and Calgary Stampeders (9-9) winning Saturday, Winnipeg must now beat the B.C. Lions (10-7) in Vancouver on Friday to qualify for the post-season.

Meanwhile, the Elks improved to 13-4 and secured first place in the West Division for the first time since 2015.
