Advanced voting sees record-breaking turnout
4:52 PM
More people have voted in advance voting for Winnipeg’s municipal election than ever before, despite election day still being more than one week away.
As of Sunday evening, 25,514 residents had already voted during the advanced voting period, leading up to the Oct. 28 election, said the City of Winnipeg in a Monday news release.
That’s the most votes ever tallied in advance voting for a municipal council and school boards election in the city.
A single-day advance voting location record of 1,879 votes was also set on Oct. 16 at the St. Vital Centre location.
The city says it has provided more voting opportunities for advance voting, which is running for four days up from three days in recent elections.
Advance voting polling locations are open 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. daily in all 15 council wards beginning Monday and running until Thursday.
Passenger killed, driver injured in vehicle rollover near Stead
2:10 PM
One man is dead following a rollover near the community of Stead, Man.
Around 3:40 a.m. Sunday morning, Powerview and Selkirk RCMP responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Provincial Road 304, about four kilometres east of Highway 59, near Old Stead Road, RCMP said in a news release.
When officers, along with firefighters and paramedics, arrived at the scene they learned that a SUV travelling east went off the road and into a ditch.
A 20-year-old male passenger from Black River First Nation died at the scene, RCMP said.
The driver, a 19-year-old male from Powerview-Pine Falls, was transported by air ambulance to hospital in Winnipeg with a non-life-threatening injury and has since been discharged.
RCMP are investigating the cause of the collision.

Power tools recovered during arrest
12:43 PM
While arresting a man at his home for dangerous driving, officers found thousands of dollars worth of power tools that had been stolen from a construction yard, police say.
Stonewall RCMP attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Oct. 9 as a driver was believed to be operating a vehicle without a licence.
The driver ignored RCMP’s light and sirens and drove erratically in Stonewall before dropping off a passenger and taking off again, police said.
Officers did not pursue the truck due to public safety concerns.
The suspect was later identified and arrested Thursday at his home on the 100 block of Main Street in Stonewall.
During the arrest, officers noticed several power tools that looked similar to ones stolen in Stony Mountain earlier this month.
A search warrant was obtained and more tools were found and seized by officers.
A 32-year-old man was charged with flight from peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000.
He remains in custody.

Delivery driver robbed at knifepoint
12:31 PM
Three men are in custody accused of robbing a food delivery driver at knifepoint.
The driver called police Saturday at about 8:15 p.m. after he was robbed of food and cash on the 200 block of Charles Street in the William Whyte neighbourhood.
The suspects were located at a nearby residence, police said.
Two 29-year-old men and one 31-year-old man face charges. All remain in custody.
Peguis woman dead in crash
12:15 PM
A 71-year-old woman is dead after her truck went into the ditch near Inwood Sunday.
Gimli RCMP were called to the scene, on Highway 17, at 10:30 a.m., a Monday news release said. Officers learned the woman veered off the road and into a ditch where she struck a large berm.
The woman, from Peguis First Nation, died at the scene. Her passenger, a 37-year-old man also from Peguis, was taken to hospital in Winnipeg with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation continues.
Archibald Street house burns
12:13 PM
A St. Boniface home undergoing renovations was the scene of a fire Sunday.
Firefighters were called to the home on the 600 block of Archibald Street shortly before 9 p.m., a news release from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said Monday.
Crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the vacant two-storey house and a utility trailer parked next to it.
The fire was deemed under control by about 9:15 p.m.
No injuries were reported and damage estimates were not available.
A fire last week on the 800 block of Archibald destroyed a house under construction. No injuries were reported.
That building was slated for emergency demolition as it was structurally compromised, a city spokesperson said last week.
Jets recall Yager from Moose
11:18 AM
Brayden Yager understood the assignment and is about to reap the rewards.
After being the Winnipeg Jets’ last cut at the end of training camp, Yager racked up five goals and nine points in six games with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.
Yager will accompany the Jets to St. Louis and could make his season debut on Tuesday against the Blues.
To make room on the roster for Yager, the Jets placed defenceman Josh Morrissey on injured reserve, retroactive to Oct. 7.
