Is Osborne a street or a road? ‘Stroad’ status fails everyone

Last month, the City of Winnipeg said it would soon begin to study ways to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety along Osborne Street, which runs between two of the city’s densest neighbourhoods, where residents walk and bike for many of their daily activities.

AI usage is prominent in Winnipeg’s municipal race, and it’s likely here to stay

Winnipeg voters may have noticed an uncanny sheen to aspects of certain mayoral campaigns this year.

Social media images and text a little too synthetically smooth — or, in some cases, downright surreal.

“This is the new normal. Everyone needs to accept that there is going to be rampant AI use by political parties … it’s the speed of adoption that’s been so disorienting,” says Aengus Bridgman, a former Winnipegger and assistant professor at McGill University whose research addresses the intersection of artificial intelligence and democracy.

“(Generative-AI use in elections) ranges from innocent fun to augmenting an under-resourced campaign to pretty clear examples of misleading.”

Winnipeg police suspend use of Crime Stoppers after hack

Free Press staff 2 minute read 4:11 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Police Service has suspended its use of Crime Stoppers after a significant data breach.

An activist group hacked and stole a massive trove of data from United States firm Navigate360 and the tip management platform it operates last March, the CBC has reported. Crime Stoppers chapters in Canada and the U.S. use the platform to keep data anonymous.

More than 1.5 million tips submitted to Canadian Crime Stoppers programs over the last 25 years were exposed in the hack, along with unredacted personal information, the public broadcaster reported.

Crime Stoppers chapters collect what are supposed to be anonymous tips from members of the public on criminal activity, which are then provided to law enforcement, with cash rewards offered.

Winnipeg business closure scare leads Hydro to reschedule planned outage

Free Press staff 2 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026

Manitoba Hydro has cancelled a planned River Heights neighbourhood outage after a miscommunication led to area businesses fearing unexpected closure.

Hydro had planned to shut down power along Lanark and Renfrew streets between Corydon Avenue and John Brebeuf Place on Friday.

Overhead electrical maintenance work can only be done with the power off, during the day, for safety reasons, Hydro spokesman Peter Chura said. It chose Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. because St. John Brebeuf School had an in-service day.

However, the affected area houses a strip of businesses including a Royal Bank of Canada, eateries, shops, services such as physiotherapy and a medical centre.

Masked, armed robbers terrorize elderly residents inside Crestview home

Erik Pindera 2 minute read Yesterday at 3:13 PM CDT

Several masked and armed suspects forced their way into a home on Lake Ridge Road in Winnipeg’s west suburbs late on Monday, terrorizing the elderly residents as they robbed the place.

Winnipeg Police Service major crimes investigators, who are asking the public for assistance, are trying to identify the suspects and learn about their movements in the area before and after the robbery, said police spokesman Const. Stephen Spencer.

“It would definitely help to have some more information as to who the individuals are. It would be great if somebody had video of the individuals prior to arriving at this location, when they weren’t wearing face coverings, or after,” said Spencer.

“If neighbours in the area maybe noticed something suspicious, around the Lakeridge Park area… around that time of night, if they did see something suspicious, definitely come forward — it could be helpful with solving this case.”
