FREDERICTON – The New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety says a woman who was released from remand custody Friday suffered a medical emergency and died a day later.

The department says the emergency happened at the New Brunswick Women’s Correctional Centre in Miramichi on Friday while the woman was waiting for transportation home.

The woman, who was in her 40s, was set to be released following a virtual court appearance.

Staff at the correctional centre called an ambulance and the woman was taken to hospital, where she died Saturday morning.

The department says it is not releasing her name at the request of her family.

It says Coroner Services has been notified and will investigate the death.
