WINNIPEG – Kerry Burtnyk has opened the ‘Road to the Roar’ pre-Olympic curling trials in Prince George, B.C. with a big-time bang.
The veteran Manitoba skip and his Assiniboine Memorial foursome began the Road to the Roar with a 8-3 victory over Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson in B.C. Tuesday afternoon. Burtnyk busted open a 2-2 tie with a deuce in the fifth and a four in the seventh before the two teams shook hands.
The fifth-seeded Burtnyk will face fourth-seeded Mike McEwen, also of Assiniboine Memorial, on the late draw Tuesday night.
Top-seeded Jeff Stoughton and his Charleswood foursome, meanwhile, open the Road to the Roar on the same Tuesday night draw against Bob Ursel of Kelowna, B.C. Ursel knocked off Edmonton’s Ted Appelman 11-7 in nine ends.
All four Manitoba rinks — including Stoughton, the top seed — are chasing the four available berths remaining for the Olympic curling trials next month in Edmonton, when Canada’s representatives for Vancouver be be determined. There are 12 teams competing to join Kevin Martin, Glenn Howard, Kevin Koe and Randy Ferbey in Edmonton.
No Manitoba women’s teams qualified for Prince George, but Jennifer Jones and her St. Vital rink already have their tickets punched for the Oly trials next month.
The Road to the Roar is a triple-knockout format with winners of the A, B and two C finals qualifying for the Olympic trials.
TSN will provide live coverage of the women’s and men’s A finals on Thursday, the B finals on Friday and the four C finals on Saturday, November 14. Curltv will also offer its subscribers live coverage of each draw.
