WINNIPEG – All four lanes on the Disraeli Freeway will remain open during peak times while the city builds a pair of brand-new bridges over the Red River, the city announced today.

The winning design for the reconstruction of the 50-year-old connection between Point Douglas and Elmwood calls for a new bridge to rise alongside the existing bridge, whose piers will be trimmed down and reused for a new bike-and-pedestrian span.

The design no longer calls for the complete closure of the freeway or the construction of a new bike bridge several blocks to the east.

The winning design was put forward by a design and construction consortium called Plenary Roads Winnipeg, which is comprised of PCL Constructors, Wardrop Engineering, Stantec Consulting and Borland Construction.

The city has allotted $195 million for the project, but the budget may change, the city warns in its announcement.

Construction is now slated to begin in 2011.
