WINNIPEG – Winnipeg artist Diana Thorneycroft has been appointed associate visual artist for the 2010-11 season of the National Arts Centre French Theatre Company.
Images from Thorneycroft’s photographs will be used in the Ottawa-based company’s brochures, posters and invitations after it announces the forthcoming season’s playbill on Tuesday.
“We feel her art conveys the concept of our season perfectly,” company spokesman Guy Warin wrote in an email.
The artistic director of the francophone company is the award-winning playwright Wajdi Mouawad, whose drama Scorched was mounted to acclaim in 2008 at the MTC Warehouse.
Thorneycroft says her images, many from her Canadian Martyrdom and Group of Seven Awkward Moment series, will “stand alone and alongside” the NAC’s use of them.
“My photographs do not illustrate the play that they are being used to promote,” she said. “If people see a connection, great, but that is not their goal.”
Her Group of Seven spoof was exhibited last year at the McMichael Canadian Collection in Kleinburg, Ont.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery has booked the show, under the title Diana Thorneycroft: Canada, Myth and History, to run June 12-22.
The veteran photographer and visual artist achieved notoriety a decade ago for her installation piece Monstrance, which utilized decaying rabbit carcasses.
