Judy Wasylycia-Leis has officially registered her campaign for mayor.
The former NDP MP for Winnipeg North met with city clerk Richard Kachur this afternoon and formally registered her campaign, a move that allows her to raise and spend up to $184,000 before voters go to the polls on Oct. 27.
Today is the first day mayoral candidates may register. The move does not commit candidates to actually run for mayor.
The registration period is open until Sept. 21, while the nomination period also takes place during September. Candidates must submit their nomination papers in order to appear on the ballot.
Speaking to reporters outside the city clerk’s office, Wasylycia-Leis declined to answer questions about her platform. She plans to hold a campaign launch Tuesday at The Forks, at 11:30 a.m.
A spokeswoman for incumbent Mayor Sam Katz said he does not yet know when he will register.
Elmwood-East Kildonan Coun. Lillian Thomas, who announced a mayoral run in December, said she will not run and will back Wasylycia-Leis.
Thomas is not seeking re-election in Elmwood. She has endorsed her executive assistant, Darryl Livingstone, to run in the ward. But he first faces an NDP nomination contest.
The campaign period for councillor candidates begins June 30, when registration begins. Nominations for councillor take place in September.
The maximum amount of money a councillor candidate may raise and spend varies by city ward, on the basis of population.
