WINNIPEG — City police have made an arrest in the shocking sexual assault of a six-year-old girl that occurred Sunday night near Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre near Ellice Avenue and Langside Street.
A 34-year-old man is in custody and has been charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual interference and abduction of a person under 14.
Police say the suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening in the 100 block of Maryland Street.
Three nights before, the little girl was playing near the community centre when police say she was lured to a home and sexually assaulted. The Winnipeg Police Service’s child abuse unit investigated and an arrest was made.
"A sexual predator has been taken off the street," said WPS Chief Keith McCaskill. "That scared people.
"It’s a tribute to our members taking that person off the street."
Const. Jason Michalyshen said the suspect has had involvement with police in the past.
He said it’s alleged the suspect tried to befriend the child prior to the incident.
"This was and will always be in the back of everyone’s minds, one of the more horrific events we have to report," he said. "We are very pleased about this arrest."
The victim had to be treated in hospital. The WPS victim services unit offered support to the girl and her family.
Greg Glen Hope of Winnipeg remains in custody.
