PEOPLE

Bill Peters manager of Research Communications and Media Services at St. Boniface General Hospital, has been chosen to host the 2010 Health and Science Communications Association Media Festival in Boston. The HeSCA Media Festival is the premier international forum for health and science media, showcasing individuals and organizations worldwide. Peters won the association’s highest honour for creative design in 2008, and has been promoting Winnipeg as a location for a World Congress of Biomedical Communications.

Darryl Friesen will be joining the music department of Providence College part-time this fall. Friesen will be teaching piano. He was grand prizewinner of the 2003 CBC Arts Encounters Young Performers Competition, a finalist in the International Stepping Stone Competition (2004) and Canadian Music Competition (2001) and received the Lawrence Genser Memorial Scholarship (2002) at the University of Manitoba School of Music. Friesen lives in Winnipeg where he maintains a studio and works at the U of M’s Faculty of Music.

Thrive Nutrition and Wellness

won the 2010 Rising Star Award presented by the Canadian Health Food Association at its recent annual conference. The award recognizes a newly established natural product supplier or retailer for overall excellence within the first three years of its operation. Thrive, which opened in late 2008, is the only health store in Winnipeg with a certified nutritionist on staff. Daniel Madrid opened Thrive after completing a Bachelor of Science in human nutritional sciences at the University of Manitoba.

Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame Inc.

has announced its inductees for 2010. The six individuals judged to have made a significant and lasting contribution to agriculture in Manitoba during their lifetime are: John Cameron (Cam) Brown of Winnipeg; Anton (posthumously) and Adeline Chorney of East Selkirk; Doug Fletcher (posthumously) formerly of Carman; Hugh Jameson of Brandon; Jacob Schulz (posthumously) formerly of Grandview.

Kildonan Place Shopping Centre

was awarded the Ivanhoe Cambridge Central Region 2009/10 Community Spirit Award for its “Count the Stars for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights” project. The project, which raised funds and awareness for the museum, was chosen by Ivanhoe Cambridge executives as an outstanding initiative designed to improve the quality of life in the mall’s trade area. Kildonan Place is owned and managed by Ivanhoe Cambridge, a Canadian-based global property owner, manager, developer and investor, focusing on high quality shopping centres.
