WINNIPEG – Fred Cleverley, a long-time Free Press editorial writer and columnist, passed away Sunday at Concordia Hospital.

Cleverley often wrote with a conservative, right-of-centre take on the world and had a particular interest in military affairs.

In 2003 the Royal Military Institute of Manitoba presented Cleverley with an Outstanding Service award for his devotion to the Canadian Armed Forces. Cleverley served with the regular Canadian army before becoming a journalist.

His final column for the Free Press appeared last month on the passing of Manitoba’s beloved former premier, Duff Roblin, whose career he covered both for the Free Press and the CBC.

Cleverley retired from the Free Press in 1993 but continued to write a weekly column for another 10 years.
After that he wrote occasionally, but often twice a month, until 2005. In the last one, datelined Honolulu, Cleverley took the Hawaii state administration to task for their anti-business predisposition.
