He’s got a gold medal and the Stanley Cup. Now Winnipeg’s Jonathan Toews is going to get his own lake.
When the Team Canada hockey hero and Chicago Blackhawks captain is back in his hometown Sunday, the province will name a northern Manitoba lake after him at a ceremony at the Legislative Building.
Pretty heady stuff for a 22-year-old.
“He had a heck of a year, right?” Premier Greg Selinger said today in disclosing the province’s plans.
Selinger said that in addition to Toews’ success, he’s impressed with how the superstar hockey player handles himself.
“He handles himself with a lot of character and he’s a good solid player with a lot of sportsmanship. I think he’s a local hero,” the premier said.
Toews Lake, as it will be called, is located north of Flin Flon.
A cabinet spokesman could not immediately say how large the lake is or give a precise location. He also didn’t know whether it already has a name.
But Selinger said that naming a lake after Toews was an appropriate honour since the young superstar and his family love to fish.
Besides, the premier said, Manitoba has a lot of lakes “so we can use them to our advantage to recognize important Manitoba citizens.”
Toews and about 15 family members are expected to attend the ceremony at the Legislative Building on Sunday. The time has yet to be announced.
Also on Sunday, the City of Winnipeg will honour Toews with an event at city hall, a parade in St. Vital and a party at Dakota Community Club.
