New Jets show promise despite loss to experienced Oilers

Preseason hockey games are always more about the process than the result, and that’s especially true when the opposing rosters appear to be a major mismatch on paper.

So a 5-2 loss by an inexperienced group of Winnipeg Jets skaters against a star-studded Edmonton Oilers squad on Saturday night in the Alberta capital was neither surprising nor alarming.

There was, however, plenty to like from the visitors’ perspective despite the outcome.

Jets St. Ivany looking to solidify himself as a regular on defence

Jack St. Ivany was on the driving range preparing for a round of golf on the morning of June 29 when he noticed he had missed a call from Kyle Dubas.

The general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins was reaching out to inform St. Ivany that he had been moved to the Winnipeg Jets in a deal for Swedish forward David Gustafsson.

“He’s not really calling me on the regular, so I figured I was traded or that something bigger happened,” St. Ivany said before the Jets faced the Colorado Avalanche in exhibition action on Monday. “I had never really been traded. Everything unfolds quickly. It was pretty crazy. Before you know it, you’re with a new team and you turn the page.”

A series of phone calls followed, including one from Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, welcoming him to the organization.

Woman who fled abuse decries lack of consequences for landlord who breached lease-breaking confidentiality

The provincial government is being asked to penalize landlords who breach the confidentiality of tenants breaking a lease to flee domestic violence after a survivor discovered there’s no consequences now.

“It put me in a very difficult situation,” said the woman, who was stunned to see that her landlord copied her abuser in email correspondence, including the domestic violence certificate she obtained to end a tenancy agreement early and leave an abusive relationship.

“My heart dropped to my stomach — I was in disbelief,” she said, recalling the confidentiality breach that occurred in 2025.

“I’m very lucky to be in a situation where it’s no longer a threat to my immediate safety.”

Hard-hitting Hansen working his way back into Bombers lineup

Thiadric Hansen is a European who lives in India and plays professional football in Canada.

Forget Pitbull, if anyone deserves the moniker “Mr. Worldwide” it’s the German-born defensive lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“I love it,” Hansen told reporters after Monday’s practice at Fort Garry Lions Field. He resides in Bangalore, the capital and largest city of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, because his girlfriend works there.

“I love travelling. The year before, I lived in Thailand for the off-season so I’m just making the most out of the opportunities that I can.”

Elmwood–East Kildonan candidate promises to tackle ‘inefficiency’ in government

The former assistant of late Elmwood–East Kildonan councillor Jason Schreyer is again running for the seat.

Chris Sweryda officially launched his campaign Saturday. He did so with the backdrop of a grocery program he runs, where food is sold near-cost out of St. Gerard School’s gym.

Rows of cereal, pasta sauce and chips filled tables ahead of the program’s afternoon opening. Sweryda created the pop-up with Schreyer months ahead of the former councillor’s April 2025 death.

The program sees roughly 500 people each day it’s open (which is every other week on Saturday), Sweryda said.
