Police, street groups looking to extend co-ordinated outreach-first approach to drug-use, trafficking crackdown

Winnipeg police and street outreach groups are discussing how to extend an initiative that tries to link people with addictions and homelessness services, while targeting open drug use and dealing.

Possibility of Hellebuyck’s return grows each day as pay slips away

CHICAGO — Buckle up, folks. The next plot twist in the ongoing soap opera between the Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck could be a doozy.

Let’s start with a few cold, hard facts. Or, if you prefer: “Previously on As the Hellebuyck Turns…”

The franchise goaltender, with five years remaining on a contract extension he willingly signed with Winnipeg in 2023, refused to report to training camp last month as he awaits word on a trade request made at the end of last season. He’s the first NHL player in more than a quarter century to essentially go on strike.

The Jets are under no obligation to move Hellebuyck, but have indicated they would try to accommodate him if another team meets their needs. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has made it clear he needs to “get this right” and wants a haul for a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and one-time Hart Trophy recipient.

Man pleads guilty to five sex assaults at, near HSC

A Winnipeg man previously found not criminally responsible for a violent assault on his father has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting four women and a teen girl in and around the Health Sciences Centre last year.

Donovan Mohammed, 29, admitted responsibility for the attacks, on Friday in Winnipeg court. He remains in custody and will be sentenced at a later date following the completion of a court-ordered pre-sentence report.

Mohammed admitted to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and four women — all strangers to him — within the span of an hour on July 2, 2025.

Court heard three of Mohammed’s victims were nurses and three of the assaults were captured on security video.

Slain chef’s family infuriated by stayed charges

The family of a Ste. Anne chef who died after an altercation at a party says they are angry a manslaughter charge has been stayed against a 46-year-old man.

“What I’ve been told is they don’t have enough evidence to prosecute criminally because the only ones that are alive to tell the story are saying they did it in self defence,” said Jason Huley, brother of 49-year-old Cameron Huley, who died May 3.

“I’m pissed. I hate our justice system … I feel they let us down.”

Steinbach RCMP were called to a home in the RM of Ste. Anne just after 11:30 p.m. on May 2 about an assault. Cameron Huley was found suffering from serious injuries. He died hours later in hospital, police said.

St. Amant gets boost for autism supports

Manitoba parents Jamie and Colin Hilding say they could not imagine their lives without the support they’ve received from St. Amant Centre in Winnipeg.

On Wednesday, the province announced an injection of $6.75 million to get more families of those with autism the help they need.

The announcement, made at St. Amant Centre on River Road, will see $5 million given to the organization which supports more than 2,200 people with developmental disabilities, autism and acquired brain injury.

It will be used to implement additional early intervention supports, like behavioral and language pathology programs, double capacity for school-aged services and increase case management capacity.
