Mark Hamill in town
for Steven King film
Mark Hamill, known to fans as either Star Wars hero Luke Skywalker or as the villainous Joker in the animated Batman series, is coming to Winnipeg to join the cast of the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk.
According to Deadline, Hamill will be joined by Judy Greer (Halloween Kills, Ant-Man and the Wasp). The film previously announced it would star Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) and David Jonsson (Alien Romulus), and would be directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) with a script by JT Mollner.
Hamill will also be starring in another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, opposite Tom Hiddleston and directed by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep).
According to the Directors Guild of Canada, the film is already in production and is scheduled to wrap in mid-September.
Applications for city
arts grants now open
The City of Winnipeg is taking applications for the Downtown Arts Capital Fund designed to support major capital projects in the downtown area over the next four years.
Applications for the annual grant program are due by Sept. 30. Applicants must have a capital project planned worth at least $500,000 and secure at least 50 per cent of project funding from other sources.
The public service will assess all applications and present funding recommendations to the executive policy committee later this year. More information is available on the city’s website.
Rapper Shad to perform
at Human Rights Museum
Celebrated Canadian rapper and broadcaster Shad is set to perform at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights on Aug. 2.
The concert — presented by Black History Manitoba and Manitoba Music — is part of an Emancipation Day program, which calls attention to the legacy of slavery in Canada.
The event begins at 6 p.m. and includes speakers, presentations and a reception with access to the museum’s Beyond the Beat: Music of Resistance and Change exhibit. Shad takes the stage at 9 p.m.
