Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein said he was offered a position with the provincial Tories if he pulled out of the 2022 mayoral race that saw then-city councillor Scott Gillingham defeat former mayor Glen Murray.

Michael Douglas comes to terms with fears, fame, father

NEW YORK — Michael Douglas, the award-winning actor and producer, recently turned 82. He is a cancer survivor, a recovered addict, a married man, the father and son of actors.

He is also an author, who begins his memoir with a message of thanks to his family — past and present and future — for the “sense of immortality.”

“Many times my father was asked, ‘Kirk, are you jealous of your son?’” he said during a recent interview at a Manhattan hotel, referring to his late father, fellow actor and sometime combatant Kirk Douglas.

“And he said, ‘Jealous?’ This is a sense of immortality, a continuity of generations.’”

Infill development on minds of all three River Heights-Fort Garry candidates

A trio of candidates will compete to become the first new city councillor in River Heights-Fort Garry since 2009.

Coun. John Orlikow, who won the seat in a byelection, is not running for another term.

Georgina Sabesky, who served as Orlikow’s executive assistant for 17 years, is now one of the candidates vying for the council seat.

Sabesky said that job gave her ample knowledge of the ward.

Local artists and music companies are up for 31 awards in 21 categories at the Western Canadian Music Awards, which will take place at the BreakOut West Festival & Conference in Winnipeg in September.

Country-roots act Boy Golden, a.k.a. Liam Duncan, is a triple nominee with nods for BreakOut Artist of the Year, Producer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

Burnstick, the duo of Jason and Nadia Burnstick, earned nominations in the same three categories.

Field Guide, the alter ego of singer-songwriter Dylan MacDonald, is a double nominee with nods for BreakOut Artist of the Year and Rock Album of the Year.

Police seize cocaine valued at $1.5M, about $750K in cash in raid on St. Vital house

A St. Vital homeowner and her husband were going about their business during an afternoon last month when police officers in tactical gear suddenly appeared, walking across their front lawn.

The target was a few doors down: a maroon bi-level home on a quiet stretch of Satinwood Place, within earshot of children playing outside at a nearby school.

The homeowner, who asked not to be named to protect their privacy, said the police presence caught the couple by surprise in the Southglen neighbourhood, where they weren’t accustomed to seeing that kind of activity.

“We never heard the (police) cars pull up, but there were cars blocking the entrance to the street from both sides,” said the neighbour. “They had a shield, a battering ram — everything. Just not used to seeing that.”

Corporate declaration of action takes flight

Businesses pledging to support reconciliation will meet in Assiniboine Park today as a national project launches.

Victoria Grant plans to attend. She’s been working on this nationwide corporate declaration of action for years — skipping Wednesday morning’s event in Winnipeg means missing launch time.

The private-sector-led declaration will gain its first signees during a ceremony, running from 10 a.m. to noon in the Pavilion.

Signatories agree to learn about the past, build cultural awareness, support Indigenous entrepreneurs and incorporate reconciliation into their corporate policies, among other things.
